It all started last year on New Year’s Day. Then-transit officer Johannes Mehserle killed an unarmed black man by the name of Oscar Grant. That’s where the trouble begins. Mehserle was charged with involuntary man-slaughter - he testified in court he meant to draw his taser gun, but instead accidentally drew his weapon. (Video: KRON) The Examiner reports riots broke out because of the sentencing. “Mehserle was sentenced to two years in jail with time served being deducted from that sentence. It's possible Mehserle could face only 7 months in jail. He could have been given up to 14 years in jail...” The trouble brewed only after sunset – reports say the riots during the day were peaceful. …but CNN reports there’s still controversy between police and protesters... Protesters say the event was mostly peaceful - and that the over 150 arrested were not all out of hand. “Police say a peaceful march to remember the victim of a shooting turned unruly at nightfall when a small number of people began throwing rocks and bottles.” HLN spoke with some of the protesters, who say police presence wasn’t necessary. “The protesters did not get our of hand. We were marching just like it’s guaranteed in the Constitution.” “We’re out there protesting and the cops just surrounded us. They said ‘disperse’ and then two seconds later ‘you’re all under arrest’.” But after the Bay Area’s KRON-TV surveyed the damage...it doesn’t appear the entire night was all ‘peace and quiet’. “Along the way we saw some destruction. We saw some store front windows that were broken, we saw some car windshields that were also broken, and we also saw the AC transit bus had its windshields, two windshields actually broken.” ...and The San Francisco Chronicle took it a step further and interviewed Philip Means, who lived in a neighborhood caught in the tail-end of the protests... “Means...burst from his house at Sixth Avenue and 18th Street in his underwear, took in the situation at a glance and decided to flee...‘It sounded like a protest gone wrong. I wasn't going to wait around for my stuff to get broken."’ The Oakland Police Chief stands by the actions of his department. KTVU reports protesters took it further than just throwing things and littering. “...one officer had his gun taken from him in a fight and another officer was hit by a car and suffered what police described as a non-life-threatening injury. ‘It's one thing breaking windows; it's another thing taking a gun from an officer’...” So what do you think of the protests? Mostly peaceful or out of hand? Tell us in our comments section.

You're watching multiple source sports news from newsy. BRAD GALBREATH Don’t pat me down, bro. That’s what some are saying as the NFL increases security at the gates. This coming after last Sunday, when a man snuck a taser into MetLife Stadium in New York. Now, the NFL is requiring every team to perform full-body pat downs. NBC’s Mike Florio says its worth the hassle. “You’re going to have people who say its an invasion of privacy, it’s a violation of our rights. Look, if you don’t like it, if you don’t want to be touched, if you’re like Francis from Stripes and you don’t want to be touched, stay home. Just stay home. Don’t come to the game. Because there’s nothing more important than the safety and security inside that stadium.” But Yahoo! Sports writer Chris Chase is all for increasing fan safety -- but he says all these measures do, is create the illusion of fan safety. “This isn't an airport. There are no metal detectors or body scanners to serve as deterrents. Security is a guy in a yellow jacket doing a perfunctory, three-second pat-down. If you want to sneak something in, it's not hard to do it.” Doesn’t sound too comforting. Sporting News columnist David Whitley takes that a step further, calling the whole system laughable. “About a million people are forced to participate in a security joke every weekend. Security Theater at work. I just wish the NFL would be straight with its fans. Stop wasting their time with pitty-patty pat-downs or get serious about security. I’d prefer the latter.” Still, anchors on Rhode Island’s WNAC ask, why is football the only sport this aggressive with security? “Have you ever been screened or patted down going into a baseball game at Fenway Park? No, you give him your ticket; you walk in. Or a Celtics game, or a movie theater, or any of that stuff. Why just football?”

The Elmira Police Department says they tasered a women this morning because she refused to spit out the drugs she had in her mouth. Police say they had no choice but to tase her for fear she would overdose on the drugs. Police pulled over her car near Columbia and First Street after they saw her going in and out of a home under surveillance as a crack house. She came out of the car but wouldn't open her mouth. Police assumed she had purchased an illegal substance inside the home and put it in her mouth to destroy the evidence by eating it. If that had happened police say they feared an overdose. But by tasing the women they were able to get the substance out of her mouth. Police say the women eventually spit out an un-named illegal narcotic substance. But in fear she had swallowed some of it they took her to St. Joseph's Hospital in Elmira. Charges against her are pending.
