Brazilian wildcard Bruno Santos has defeated local wildcard Manoa Drollet (PYF) to win the Billabong Pro Tahiti and become the first Brazilian to win an ASP World Tour event in five years. Santos, who earned his spot in the Billabong Pro Tahiti with a runner-up finish in the Air Tahiti Nui VonZipper Trials held prior to the main event, got the better of local Teahupoo specialist Drollet in their low scoring affair. Santos beat Drollet 9.16 to 6.83 on a borrowed surfboard in inconsistent three-foot (one metre) waves. Santos defeated last year’s World No. 1 Mick Fanning (AUS), World No. 2 Taj Burrow and 2001 ASP World Champion C.J. Hobgood (USA), among others, en route to his victory over Drollet.

The Billabong Pro Tahiti, with prize money of USD $320,000, is the 3rd event on the association of Surfing Professionals World Tour (ASP). Tahiti is one of the world's best known surfing destinations - and in May, it plays host to the world's most exciting surfing event, the spectacular Billabong Pro Tahiti, presented by Air Tahiti Nui. The annual event is staged off the fishing village of Teahupoo on the south coast of the main island of Tahiti, where the world's elite surfers do battle each year with some of the largest waves on the planet. But it is the giant Teahupoo, a huge left hand breaking wave specific to Tahiti, which every serious surfer wants to conquer - or at the very least see - and from 08-18 May, the Bilabong Pro Tahiti makes this possible for the best of the best. THE world’s top 45 surfers have been issued a severe warning about what to expect for the 2008 Billabong Pro Tahiti with the world’s heaviest wave, Teahupoo, roaring to life on the opening day of the Air Tahiti Nui - Von Zipper Trials. The Trials event awards two wildcards into the Billabong Pro main event and pits 40 respected international big wave surfers against 40 Tahitian locals. The 2008 Trials event has attracted the cream of progressive big wave surfing talent with the likes of Jamie Sterling (Haw), Kalani Chapman (Haw), Jamie O’Brien (Haw), Cory Lopez (USA), Dylan Longbottom (AUS), Clay Marzo (Haw), Laurie Towner (AUS), Brian Conley (USA), and Anthony Walsh (AUS) making the field the strongest in its nine year history. A powerful WSW swell confronted contestants on day one, with a light offshore breeze fanning perfect 10-12ft (3-4m) sets with the occasional 15ft sneaker keeping contestants in round one and two on their toes. www.billabongpro****
