Candelaria, the Canary Islands’ symbol of sincere religious devotion, has an interesting air about it. Home to the archipelago’s well-loved patron saint, pilgrims, and Catholic devotees should not miss this town when in Tenerife. Its claim to fame as one of island’s religious focal points has a long history dating back to 1392. It was when the Guanches found the figure of the Virgin of Candelaria by the ocean. At present, the figure who is fondly known as the ‘Black Madonna’ because of its color, is housed in its solemn basilica. This beautiful seaside church is one the most photographed on the island. It also serves as a meeting point for thousands of pilgrims every year during the patron’s day.

This is most likely one of the most unique places of the island. A sentence encourages us in our journey: “Viva la Virgen del Buen Viaje” [long live the Virgin of good journey], Patron of the town, who’s name can be read on the cliffs of the small harbour. Located in the northwest corner of Fuerteventura, El Cotillo is the ideal place to enjoy delicious fresh fish in any of the charming restaurants overlooking the ocean.

In Fuerteventura, to say “there is a beach for everyone” is an understatement. Start in the northeast at the fine white sand of Corralejo Beach opposite the world-famous shape-shifting Dunes of Corralejo Natural Park. The popular 11 km shoreline has sections for families and even for naturists.

The archipelago is home to some of the finest beaches and seafront resorts accessible to Europe - but the islands also contain expanses of unique, breathtaking scenery that you are unlikely to see anywhere else on earth. Lunar-looking stretches of volcanic terrain suddenly merge into lush, green forests, giving some parts of the Canaries the feel of a prehistoric paradise just waiting to be explored. Add to this the fact that the weather stays warm all year round and you have the makings of the perfect holiday all in one.

An idea of how bad the fires were in Tenerife, I got this from my roof. Tenerife was the worst hit of the islands with around 8,800 people evacuated, 37,000 acres of land blackened and 900 homes destroyed
