Een mijlpaal in de Britse filmgeschiedenis van het regisseursduo Michael Powell en Emeric Pressburger, dat de vaak als koel bestempelde Britse cinema verrijkte met opmerkelijk flamboyante producties. Deze visueel overweldigende bewerking van Hans Christian Andersens gelijknamige sprookje werd overgeplaatst naar het milieu van de beroemde Ballets Russes van Sergej Diaghilev. Ballerina Victoria Page (Moira Shearer) kan niet kiezen: wordt het de kunst of de liefde? ‘Een film die een enorme aantrekkingskracht op me uitoefent en me niet loslaat’, aldus Martin Scorsese, die het geheel gerestaureerde en in Technicolor-luister herstelde The Red Shoes presenteerde in het programma Cannes Classics op het filmfestival van Cannes 2009. Scorsese was een groot bewonderaar van de in april overleden cameraman Jack Cardiff, die volgens hem ‘kon schilderen met de camera’. Vooral in zijn samenwerking met Powell en Pressburger stond Cardiff bekend om zijn subtiele kleurgebruik en fantasierijke tegendraadsheid. The Red Shoes won twee Oscars (art-direction, muziek) en een Golden Globe.
