Transcript by Newsy**** BY BRANDON TWICHELL You're watching multisource science video news analysis from Newsy. The world’s most famous ship could be gone -- sooner than expected. Scientists have discovered a new bacterium that is quickly eating away the Titanic, the so-called “unsinkable ship”. But, scientists think the bacterium could actually have useful purposes in society. We’re looking at coverage of the deteriorating ship from Discovery Channel, CTV, The Daily Mail, and Flesh and Stone. The new bacterium, named Halomonas titanicae, was found living in a community of other bacteria within rusticles, or icicle-shaped rust deposits found along the Titanic’s hull. A scientist on the discovery team explains to CTV how the bacterium works. “They’re able to reproduce and interact with all the other species that are there and then continue to extract the iron away from the steel that the Titanic was made of, and so it’s going to degrade and break down all of the Titanic and it’ll be all gone and recycled.” The Discovery Channel takes a look at the bacterium’s environment, which is located on the ocean floor in the frigid north Atlantic. “They thrive in extreme environments where we thought no life could survive. Two and a half miles beneath the sea, there’s no light or oxygen. It’s freezing cold, and the water pressure reaches a bone-crushing 6000 lbs per square inch.” Scientists believe the bacterium could be beneficial. The Daily Mail released the researchers’ statement of its potential uses. “'We believe H. titanicae plays a part in the recycling of iron structures at certain depths. This could be useful in the disposal of old naval and merchant ships and oil rigs that have been cleaned of toxins and oil-based products and then sunk in the deep ocean.'” One question on everyone’s mind is: How much longer will the Titanic exist? Researchers say it will be nothing but a rust stain on the ocean floor by 2030 at the latest. A writer at Flesh and Stone pokes fun at those worried of it disappearing forever. “What difference does it make if the Titanic rusts away in five years or 30 years? It’s not like since the discovery of the Titanic that millions of feet of video tape haven’t been shot, or that Disney can make a Disney World East of East out of it.” So, do you think the new bacterium could be harnessed for useful purposes, or will it forever be infamous for destroying the “unsinkable ship”? Nearly 100 years after the Sinking of the Luxury Liner Titanic we find ourselves still fascinated with the event. In 1996, I have the honour of meeting and spending time with Edith Haisman Brown and Michel Navratil, two survivors of the Titanic tragedy; since that time I have held a fascination about the event. In order to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the sinking, Rhapsody Tours has produced a series of short videos to explore the fascination, the myths, the people on board, the movies, the aftermath and much more. These video are full of facts and stories that are interesting, surprising and at times will tuck at your heart strings. To Receive Access to the entire Titanic Video Series visit www.rhapsodytours**** and click the "Titanic Video Series" Picture I hope you enjoy and I look forward to your comments. Gerry MacPherson
