BY ADAM SPENCER ANCHOR ALEX ROZIER You're watching multisource sports news analysis from Newsy. Twitter is a dangerous place for professional athletes. The latest player to come under national scrutiny for questionable tweets is Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall, who had some very unpatriotic words to say about the death of Osama bin Laden. ESPN explains... “Americans’ response to bin Laden’s killing has ranged from great relief to full-on rejoicing. For some, the news, while welcome, isn’t necessarily cause for such displays of jubilation. Steelers’ Rashard Mendenhall, for one, tempered on Twitter, writing, ‘What kind of person celebrates death? It’s amazing how people can HATE a man they’ve never even heard speak.’ ‘We’ve only heard one side.’ Then, concerning the collapse of the twin towers, ‘We’ll never know what really happened. I just have a hard time believing an airplane can take down a skyscraper demolition style.’” Rumors are already circulating about how the Steelers will handle this situation. A writer for Steelers Depot says he wouldn’t be surprised if Mendenhall is traded or released before the 2011 season opens... “The Steelers organization hates to be viewed in a negative light ... and they try their best not to be cast in a negative spotlight. In short, they want to be known as a class organization. While Mendenhall is certainly protected by his first amendment rights, it does not mean his employer, the Steelers, have to agree with his viewpoints, and it is very obvious that they don’t.” ADD: *******www.steelersdepot****/2011/05/ /comment-page-1/ But, a writer for Pro Football Talk believes it’s not a first amendment issue, but a celebrity issue, saying Mendenhall’s comments are a bigger deal because of his fame. “This isn’t a matter of free speech, a right that we respect, honor, and cherish. It’s about business, and football players are in the entertainment business. For the same reasons that actors and singers sometimes find themselves vilified for making unpopular political comments, athletes can suffer the same fate.” Maybe it’s time for Mendenhall to give up Twitter for awhile. Because, as a Chicago Tribune writer points out, this isn’t the first time he’s caused controversy with his tweets... “You might recall the way Mendenhall tweeted support of the moronic stylings of Minnesota’s Adrian Peterson a while back, even after Peterson backed off comparing NFL players to slaves. Mendenhall specified that they run a parallel course. Yes. Well. Just as long as you ignore, I don’t know, everything.” Steeler’s owner Art Rooney II has issued a response to Mendenhall’s tweets on the team’s website, saying he doesn’t know what Mendenhall meant by the tweets and that the Steelers’ organization is proud of the men and women serving overseas. BY MOLLY HULSEY You're watching multisource sports video news analysis from Newsy. A Twitter account is free-- but the tweets just got really expensive for one NBA owner. Here’s HLN. “The NBA just hammered Miami Heat owner Micky Arison for a tweet that he just sent out. They hammered him with a $500,000 fine. He recently engaged in a back-and-forth with some of his Twitter followers about the NBA lockout, and the problem is the NBA has a zero tolerance policy. Owners are not allowed to discuss anything related with the current labor dispute.” So just what was the offending tweet, and how much will the fine really hurt Arison? WFOR breaks it down. “A fan took him and other owners to task, saying on Twitter that they were being ‘greedy pigs.’ Arison’s response was ‘You are barking at the wrong owner.’... In case you’re wondering and counting, his brief tweet is costing him more than $15,000 per character. But he’s worth $4 billion so it won’t sting too much.” Arison only had 140 characters to work with-- but a writer for CNET says there was a lot of meaning in that short message. “With these few words, he pointed his tweeting fingers at small-market and, some might say, small-minded owners, such as Portland Trail Blazers owner Paul Allen, who are gritting their teeth for an extra few pounds of freshly bitten flesh.” But NBA commissioner David Stern tells The New York Times-- the fine was more about when the tweet was sent than what it said. “‘Stern [noted] that the message appeared on the very night that negotiations collapsed. ‘We’re trying very hard to get a deal done with the players, or we were, and we don’t need any external distractions to that focus.’” So is Arison’s tweet a sign of a growing rift between the owners? ESPN’s Marc Stein doesn’t think so. “He’s not as desperate as an owner in Indiana or Memphis or Atlanta who’s looking at a half-empty building all the time. We’ve known all along that there’s no way all 30 owners are going to be on the same page, but I don’t see this having a dramatic impact on the talks from here.” NBA games are now canceled through November 30th, and no new talks between owners and the Players’ Association have been scheduled.
