Netflix, Hulu, the classic YouTube and now … Facebook? - Warner Brothers Studios announced Monday they’ll be using the social media platform to start streaming movies.
“Users have a 48 hour window to watch the film, during which time they can make comments, pause and replay, all while still on their Facebook page -- don't want to miss those pending requests, after all!”
But as MSNBC reports the movies won’t be free.
“If you ‘like’ for example The Dark Knight on facebook then for the equivalent of about $3 dollars in facebook credits you can rent the film and watch it via your facebook.”
Warner Brother’s new partnership comes shortly after instant streaming giant Netflix pulled their movie review sharing program from the social network. A financial expert for Goldman Sach’s tells Barron’s...
“...this is no immediate threat to Netflix, given that this is effectively ‘pay per view,’ more like video-on-demand than Netflix’s streaming subscription. But … Facebook has more than 500 million active users, half of whom are online on any given day, versus just 20 million subscribers at Netflix. … ‘Facebook could become a credible threat.’”
Barron’s also reports Netflix’s shares fell another 5 percent Tuesday, which makes for a total of 20 percent since early February. But The Wall Street Journal says the drop is not a direct result of Warner Brothers' move and has more to do with Amazon****’s tv-streaming service introduced last month.
Warner Brothers plans to start the renting experiment with The Dark Knight, and make more movies available later. The rental fee is measured in credits, a currency the social network introduced in January. Until now credits were used primarily in games - it takes 10 facebook credits to equal a dollar.
A writer for All Things Digital says the only surprising thing about the partnership is that it’s taken this long to come about.
“...other video sites are trying to figure out how to add social ‘hooks’ into their experience, Facebook doesn’t have that problem. It is the social hook. … Facebook is either the 2nd or 6th-biggest video site in the U.S., depending on who’s counting. And that’s without the benefit of any Hollywood hook-up at all: Just the clips you and your pals put up.”
But Wired says Netflix still has the upper hand when it comes to devices.
“Facebook currently lacks the device integration that Netflix has achieved. For instance, watching Netflix streaming movies on a big TV is simple for those who own game consoles, Tivos, certified Blu-Ray disc players, media playing devices like Apple TV, Google TV and the Roku Box, iPhones, iPads and Android devices (sort of).”
So what do you think? Will this new partnership leave the competition reeling or will the social media and movie mix be too much for one site?

Though not credited, the star of this film is Rin Tin Tin, the loveable German Shepard who was a box office smash in the early twentieth century (sometimes given credit for saving Warner Brothers from bankruptcy). The Silver Trail is packed full of Rin Tin Tin fun along with his owner Rex Lease. The beautiful and spunky Mary Russell is the leading lady, and the trio must bust up some claim jumpers whoâre stealing land. When it becomes clear that corrupt government officials are behind the problems, things get hairy. Rin Tin Tin is always charming, and The Silver Trail provides wholesome family entertainment that is truly timeless.

On the music scene: how Madonna's going to kick your ass, plus why the Black Crowes are mad at Maxim and Neverland Ranch could be yours!
Hi everyone I'm Andrea Rene and you are watching the music news from get the daily****
It was announced yesterday that the Material girl has finally picked a title and released date for her highly anticipated forthcoming album. Her last studio album for Warner Music Group is called "Hard Candy." Not only does Madonna love candy, but as she says "its going to kick your ass, but make you feel good." It features superhot producers Timbaland and Danja, plus Justin Timberlake appears on mulitple tracks. JT also just happens to be the one who'll induct Madge into the rock and roll hall of fame. Look for her new album to hit stores on April 29th with her first single 'Four Minutes" out at the end of March.
Rockers the Black Crowes have a new album coming out next week, and they hope that no one will read the Maxim magazine review panning it, because, well, Maxim didn't even listen to the ablum! In the March issues of Maxim, a reviewer says the groups latest disc called "Warpaint" is worth 2 and half stars out of five, but, turns out the reviewer never got an advanced copy and based the review off their only single released "Goodbye daughters of the revolution." The crowes rightly thought this was unfair and managed to get an apology from the publication. But let's be honest, does anyone read reviews from Maxim anyway?
Michael Jackson's re-release of his worldwide smash album "Thriller" is doing great on the charts, so he probably shouldn't have any problems coming up with the $24 million dollars he needs to save Neverland Ranch from going up for auction. Yes, the infamous property near Santa Barabara, CA is once again on the chopping block if Jackson doesn't pay up by March 19th. I think it would be interesting to see who would by that gigantic playground! But considering Michael is still worth hundreds of millions, I don't think he should have any problems paying up.
I'm Andrea Rene and you just heard the music news, right here at get the daily****.

LA GRAN LIMPIEZA / THE GREAT L.A. RIVER CLEANUP

(FoLAR) Friends of the Los Angeles River is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization founded in 1986, whose mission is to protect and restore the natural and historic heritage of the Los Angeles River and its riparian habitat through inclusive planning, education and wise stewardship. Once home to steelhead and grizzlies, the Los Angeles River meandered through wetlands, marshes, willow, alder and sycamore, providing desperately needed water for the region. Now running over 50 miles long - from the suburbs of the San Fernando Valley to the ocean in Long Beach - the Los Angeles River flows through 14 cities and countless neighborhoods. When the Army Corps of Engineers initiated a flood control project in the late 1930's, they began the process of paving 80% of the River, creating the world's largest storm drain. Over the ensuing decades, the River that had been the sole water supply for the City of Los Angeles before the Los Angeles Aqueduct was completed in 1913 almost disappeared from public consciousness. With the cement came a perceptual shift: the River no longer existed. Instead, it was a "flood control channel," a no-man's land, surrounded by fences and signs.
