Consumer Reports’ annual survey of 58,000 readers put AT&T dead last among wireless carriers. Responses blasted AT&T’s data services, voice calling, overall value, and customer support -- making AT&T the only network to experience a significant ratings drop from 2009. St. Louis NBC-affiliate KSDK has the story. “The nation’s second-largest wireless network received the worst possible rating in 8 of the 9 categories the magazine studied. Readers gave AT&T an overall score of just 60 out of 100, which is nine points below its nearest competitor, T-Mobile. U.S. Cellular is number one on this year’s list, followed by Verizon and Sprint.” A blogger for Connected Planet wonders if it’s a geographic issue -- highly-ranked Sprint and Verizon have more extensive coverage than the bottom two networks, AT&T and T-Mobile. “It’s difficult to match up AT&T’s poor performance in the survey with the recent field tests of networks, which show AT&T producing some of the best network performance metrics in major markets across the country. Part of the problem, though, might be that a substantial portion of the U.S. population doesn’t live in those major markets.” The news is of particular concern to AT&T as Apple prepares to launch the iPhone on Verizon, a move which some experts predict could cost AT&T 6 million customers in the first year. (Video: NECN) But a writer for PCWorld says, maybe the iPhone is actually what’s dragging AT&T down. “It is worth noting, however, that more than half of the responding AT&T customers are iPhone users, and that among non-iPhone smartphone owners AT&T fared better. Perhaps, much of the AT&T network woes are as much--or more-- a function of the iPhone as they are of the AT&T network itself.” Finally, an analyst for CNBC says hold the phone before you jump the AT&T ship -- this wasn’t a scientific study. It was a survey. FORTT: “Not exactly the worst carrier, Maria, though that is the word the magazine uses. The most hated. It’s an important distinction. ... Consumer Reports didn’t test AT&T’s network -- they polled their readers about their experience. ... It’s possible that AT&T’s network is now better than customers think, and these results are based on old attitudes, but to some degree, perception is reality.” ComputerWorld reports AT&T came in at 22 points below top-ranked U.S. Cellular -- more than twice the 9-point gap between AT&T and top-ranked Verizon in 2009.

BY ALYSSA CARTEE You're watching multisource entertainment video news analysis from Newsy “And the Razzie goes to...” all in Hollywood tremble in fear of hearing their name. The Annual Golden Raspberry Awards honor the worst of the year’s movies. The nights big winner, er...loser.... M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘The Last Airbender.’ The movie took home Razzies in Worst Picture, Worst Supporting Actor, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay and a new category Worst Eye-Gouging Mis-Use of 3-D. Chick flick ‘Sex and the City 2’ wasn’t far behind- taking home three Razzies. The gal pals collectively won Worst Actress along with Worst Ensemble and Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel. (Video: New York 1) Here’s reaction from a blogger for The Stir. “The whole bunch... collectively took Worst Actress. Which means they each only got one-fourth of a diss? … Fine, but I liked it anyway.” But Razzie founder John Wilson tells Unreality Shout- the femme flick was over-the-top in a down-and-out economy. "It was released in the middle of a period of American history when everyone's scrounging not to lose their homes. And these women are riding around in Rolls-Royces, buying expensive shoes and just throwing money around like they're drunk." Hollywood hunk and twitter king Ashton Kutcher also received recognition for his performances in ‘Killers’ and 'Valentine’s Day.’ The ladies at WFAA in Dallas say- not-so-shocking. “What good movie has Ashton Kutcher been in? Let’s just be real.” “I thought Valentine’s Day was kinda cute.” “Okay well you’re being very nice.” But the evening isn’t all about the winners and losers. Entertainment Weekly says the 31-year tradition is about lightening up. “Given its tradition of embracing the best of the worst, the event’s self-aware kitsch is not only appropriate, it’s incredibly endearing.” And a blogger for Westword says- cheer up Razzie winners. Even if the movie sucked, that doesn’t mean it didn’t rake in the dough. “The average domestic box office for a Best Picture nominee? $130.9 million … The average domestic box office for a Worst Picture nominee? $126.3 million … We find this surprising -- We actually thought the Worst Picture movies would have done better at the box office, under the assumption that the people making them had expressly shot for mass appeal at the expense of quality.” None of this year’s Razzie winners actually showed up to claim their prizes- but in 2010- Sandra Bullock famously came to accept her Worst Actress award for All About Steve...only to win an Oscar for Best Actress the next night for her performance in The Blind Side. BY CHRISTINE SLUSSER ANCHOR SALEM SOLOMAN You're watching multisource world news analysis from Newsy “A new day and a nightmare for quake victims in Japan.” (Video Source: CNN) “...has some Japanese calling this Japan’s Chernobyl.” (Video Source: CBS) JOHN LARGE: “...and we know about 170,000 people have now been evacuated, so clearly they are preparing for the worst case.” (Video Source: ITN) From earthquakes, to tsunamis, to nuclear meltdowns, it’s hard to imagine things getting much worse for Japan--but where there’s a media, there’s a way. One theme dominating the coverage is “can it get any worse?” Media outlets take a look at the worst case scenarios. (Video Source: RT) “There are now three power plants in Japan where there are fears about radiation.” (Video Source: Sky News) “..***uld overheat and meltdown, releasing radioactivity into the environment.” (Video Source: MSN) “Japan has declared an emergency alert at another nuclear power plant in the Northeast of the country. Radiation levels of about 700 times higher than normal have reportedly been detected.” (Video Source: RT) One YouTube user was compelled enough to warn Americans of impending radioactive doom. “The wind was blowing to the east of Japan, and the picture you’re looking at suggests where it’s gonna go. With the current... situation, wind current and so on and so forth, so I don’t know what more to say to you, I don’t have the knowledge to advise you anymore... ” Fox News interviewed nuclear power expert Joe Cirincione, who says the likelihood of America having a similar fate is very, very possible. “[A] trifecta of earthquake, tsunami and nuclear meltdown in the U.S. remains a possibility...Diablo Canyon in California is ‘a classic case of a very large nuclear reactor in an area that's seismically active...’” ...and the disaster anxiety has indeed spread overseas. A writer for Canada Free Press imagines a monster volcano exploding in the U.S. “If the Yellowstone Park caldera, the largest potential volcano in the U.S. should explode, it would have a comparable affect and there isn’t a damn thing that can be done about it.” Keep up with the latest on the Japanese disaster by downloading the latest Newsy iphone app. You can now stream our videos through your Apple TV – it’s free from the iTunes Store.
