Veneers are thin porcelain "tooth fronts" which are bonded onto the tooth. Only minimal tooth reduction is needed. Veneers can be used to correct aging smile lines, close spaces, whiten teeth and straighten crooked teeth instantly. Veneers are an excellent cosmetic remedy for a variety of dental conditions that affect the appearance of your front teeth, so you can smile with confidence!
Stephen P. Mattingly, DMD Family Dentistry uses dental veneers to close diastemas (spaces between teeth), restore broken or chipped teeth, cover unsightly, stained or washed-out fillings, whiten permanently stained or discolored teeth and correct uneven or crooked teeth. Our newest veneer technology allows us to achieve this without removing any tooth structure and spending very minimal amount of chair time.
Porcelain veneers have become increasingly popular over the last decade; tens of thousands of them have been placed to mask discolorations, to brighten teeth, and to improve a smile. Highly resistant to permanent staining from coffee, tea, or even cigarette smoking, the wafer-thin porcelain veneers bond tenaciously to your teeth, resulting in aesthetically pleasing, natural-looking teeth.
Dentures are prosthetic devices constructed to replace missing teeth, and which are supported by surrounding soft and hard tissues of the oral cavity. Conventional dentures are removable, however there are many different denture designs, some which rely on bonding or clasping onto teeth or dental implants. Complete dentures cover your entire upper or lower jaw while partial dentures replace one or a few teeth.
Complete dentures can be either "conventional" or "immediate." Made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has begun to heal, a conventional denture is ready for placement in the mouth about 8 to 12 weeks after the teeth have been removed. Immediate dentures are made in advance and can be positioned as soon as the teeth are removed. As a result, with immediate dentures the wearer does not have to be without teeth during the healing period.
If your natural teeth are lost or damaged, we can create comfortable, natural-looking dentures to help you look, talk, and eat normally. We use the latest technology to design or restore dentures that fit your mouth and your expectations perfectly.
Stephen P. Mattingly, DMD Family Dentistry can help you determine if you need complete or full dentures, partial dentures, or no dentures at all.
Crowns and Bridges
When a tooth is fractured, has a large, old filling, or is severely damaged by decay, your dentist may recommend the placement of a crown, or cap. Crowns strengthen and protect the remaining tooth structure and can improve the appearance of your smile. Types of crowns include the full porcelain crown, the porcelain-fused-to-metal crown and the all-metal crown.
Both crowns and most bridges are fixed prosthetic devices. Unlike removable devices such as dentures, which you can take out and clean daily, crowns and bridges are cemented onto existing teeth or implants, and can only be removed by a dentist. Dental crowns and bridges are a way to replace missing teeth or teeth that are too decayed to be restored with white fillings or dental bonding.
Stephen P. Mattingly, DMD Family Dentistry custom crafts natural-looking crowns and bridges to repair and replace missing teeth. A dental crown is placed over an existing tooth while a dental bridge is permanently placed between two crowns to fill in empty spaces left by missing teeth. If you have worn, broken-down or missing teeth, crowns and bridges can return your smile to full health, function and beauty.
A root canal is a treatment used to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or becomes infected. During a root canal procedure, the nerve and pulp are removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. Without root canal treatment, the tissue surrounding the tooth will become infected and abscesses may form.
When cavities become so large that they reach the tooth's root, a root canal is often necessary to prevent the need for a tooth extraction. Thanks to recent root canal technology, this virtually pain-free dental treatment can be done in just one visit with minimal recovery time.
When the pulp of a tooth is damaged, the only alternative to root canal treatment is extraction of the tooth. After an extraction, the lost tooth must then be replaced with an implant, bridge to restore function and prevent adjacent teeth from shifting. This requires surgery or dental procedures on adjacent healthy teeth and can be far more costly and time-consuming than endodontic treatment and restoration of the natural tooth. As effective as modern tooth replacements are, nothing is as good as the original making a root canal often times the best method of treatment.
