Simple solution
The solar panel in connected in parallel... So the solar panel is only acting as a switch. All the energy come from the battery, and when you turn on the light the fact that it's shining on the panel just let the current go through it. So the current is bypassing the momentary switch by going throught the solar panel. That's why it works for a short time, until the battery runs out...

  The subtitle says to connect in parallel with the switch, but the circuit diagram shows it connected across the switch AND battery.
  
  There's no way this can work - other than just using the solar panel as a switch / photoresistor. The power is coming from the battery (if you don't believe this, try 'jump starting' it with the battery, then removing it).

Why?
Not to be rude, but just running the LED should give you more run time than putting the solar cell on it. The power is still all coming from the battery, and the solar cell just introduces inefficiencies into the system over just an LED.

But it is kind of a neat hack. Be interesting to see how long it runs compared to just the LED - did you measure that?

nice work!.. but.. no.. not forever.. nor till the led burnt.. still.. there are losses.. like.. the wire.. thou it is too small.. it still has loss.. little by little.. the led's light intensity gets lower.. it may not be noticed with a naked eye.. but it does..

me.. myself.. have been trying to discover such a perpetual energy but no.. nothing would be possible if there are losses..

well.. too much of that.. that may still save some money for lighting.. and it can save batteries.. you may use that for a longer time without worrying the battery's life..

I wish. I tried that same thing maybe 8 years ago when I was in middle school. The problem with this is that the Photovoltaic panel would have to generate more energy than it was taking in to have the perpetual light. LED lights do not produce enough protons to excite the electrons in the Photovoltaic panel

This isn't self powered
#1 the internal resistance in the solar panel would make this less effective than just using the batter.
#2 Led's last a long long time. Longer than 100K hours (which i garuntee that you did not test)
