Reyna relishing USA expectations

Manchester City star Claudio Reyna believes the USA have raised their fans' expectations after their excellent 2002 World Cup performance.

The Stars and Stripes reached the quarterfinals in Japan and South Korea, and sustained success in the intervening years has seen them ranked as high as fourth in the world by FIFA.

A tough group draw - which sees them pitted against Italy, Czech Republic and Ghana - may make a repeat tough to achieve, but captain Reyna is unfazed.

"As a group, we feel that we have a lot to prove and I think we accept that," he said. "I think that at the World Cup, all 32 teams have something to prove.

"Again, the last World Cup was fantastic for us as a team, for our country as a sport. Now we want to do the same thing again. We want to play three very good games in our group and give ourselves a chance to get out of our group. We're looking forward to that.

"We have a lot of good players. Our sport has grown a lot and that's something that is nice, to have expectations at a World Cup and not just to come up here, make the numbers and kind of have a good time. We're here and it's different. We're serious about being here and doing well."

Earlier, forward Brian Ching has similar things to say: "It's important for us to do well in this World Cup because of the pressure and the media attention we're getting," he said.

"People have to understand it's a tough group. A team like France the last time around didn't even win a game or score a goal, and they were the defending champions. When you look at that, you realize anything can happen in these games.

"I think we have the right mentality and we'll be prepared going in."

than the us, ok. but you have to see the games they play; against all the little countries in the caribbean. it's much easier for northern americans to stand high in the ranking than it is for european teams. if there was a mixed qualification tournament, mexico wouldn't be that high, top ten would be all european with brazil and argentina. face it us and mexico are both dramatically overrated

good point, there is alot more competition in europe, or south america, or africa, even asia. we just happen to have a geographical uneven diffusion of countries. i mean, canada, mexico, and the US make up what like 98% of the total land mass of north america. basically all of those small caribbean teams have to play for third behind mexico and america, and maybe canada. maybe they should give less weight to the teams from oceana, and north america, being that there are only two or three large countries, with large populations, and alot of small islands. it would be too difficult however to fly all over north and south america to qualitfy. i mean imagine argentina having to fly to canada just to play them. or if they combined oceana and north america, imagine flying from new zealand, to the us. yeah, they should keep the current lik zone or region qualification set-up, just not rank the us or mexico, or australia so high. unless they take into account all of the other intenational matches that are played. which i am sure they do. i thought it was a little suspect that mexico was ranked #4 in the world. and the us #5. we are good, but not that good, and neither is mexico. nonetheless, i am really looking forward to this world cup. i am for the US naturally, but my second team is brasil. i was for them last time, after the US got put out. i like their style, and plus that is where my girlfriend is from. but she could give a S**t about football. some girls just don't dig it. she might watch some of it with me. but i doubt it. peace man.
