  • Raspberry hair removal

Next time how about something equally ridiculous such as pulling out each hair on a raspberry to the words of; "It's silly and stupid and I'm a twit."

  • That was pretty cool

I thought plasma was the only cool thing you could make with a Microwave =)

  • sick!

just the plasma part can be a video

    By Lyev 1202625234
  • Wow!

Wow, that is amazing! Especially the yellow glowing(from sodium?) plasma! I wonder if you could make the plasma neutrally bouyant by adding different things to it.

You could also wrap the bottle in aluminum foil or some other metal when heating it to equally distribute the heat, to help prevent shattering.

  • Awesome Microwave Experiment

Awesome Microwave Experiment. I tried it and it really works. Wow. Just like the hot glass as a conductor experiment. I would love to see a video of that too.

  • ok

microwaves don't start unless there close

hey man, that was pretty cool! thnx for sharing with us, i can try it myself now..

  • Do over?

Ehh, the 'explanation' part is a bit boring, so maybe I'll re-submit this one, and melt some martini glasses at the same time as I'm explaining.

    • if that microwave will last

it looks pretty beat up ... also didn't it loose the frame which goes around the glass - I would be worried a little about microwave energy leakage

    • Same oven!

Since starting the "unwise microwave" craze in the early 1990s I've been using... the same oven! That's my kitchen oven. Some of the paint is a bit charred, but that doesn't affect normal cooking. I've removed the adhesive plastic from the metal door grid. The grid was always black (great for photography.)

I have many separate ways to test for leakage. This particular oven has a few milliwatts/cm^2 leakage from one door corner, near the upper hinge. It was like this even when fairly new.

  • cooling it down is the key ...

it shattered because you are being impatient. why not, heat it up slower in the beginning with the torch... slower... more even... next, the cool down is the key to keep from shattering. will need to turn microwave back on, say, once every other minute for 30 seconds,, then less and less...
cooling down too quick is why it shattered, otherwise, would make a nice piece of art

    • bingo!

      great advise, its called anealing.
I am going to try this out when I can find my torch
      five stars!!!

  • A not so cold beer...

    Nice stuff, Bill.
I would imagine molten glass is not that conductive, but neither is air but the plasmoid forms. I wonder what is being outgassed. Brown bottle suggests impurities but it still works with a clear wine glass.
The microwave is a bit scorched but they are remarkably tough considering they are built down to a price. I guess a magnetron is basically valve technology. It's usually the solid state electronics that fail in a MO.

My friend Billy, Bravo for another one time, I am a science lover like you, working as an electronic engineer for the living.
    Thank you

  • Wow!

Very good vid. I love it, 5 stars for you. One thing though, you seem to have caught the "umbug." So many "um's" make it look like you're really nervous, especially with the constant movement of the camera. Relax, it's just an internet vid. Pretend like you're the only one watching. You've made a great vid and you should have confidence.
