There are better ways,like sniffing,saline washes and sprays.
this is a gimmick.

  This exercise is based on the anciant yoga text's and is by no meens a "gimmick".
  it is part of many exercises, among them "jala neti" which you call - "saline washes"
  
  have you tried it yourself for a while before dismissing it like that?
  
  "real yoga"? do you even know the real meaning of the word and it's purpose?

  the whole purpose of this exercise is to drive the mucus out of the nose.
