F-18 Crossing The Sound Barrier!!

The military does not allow jets to break the sound barrier over cities/people. What you see is the moisture in the air being condensed into visible precipitation (clouds) as the jet compresses the air as it flys.

There is a reason for hearing the sound... He does not "Break" the sound barrier. He is on the threshhold of the barrier, Which is actually a lot more difficult than it looks to sustain.

if a jet travels at supersonic speed then it fires a bullet or a missile, will the bullet or missile also has that kind of vapor cone?? logicaly speaking, the bullet will have much more velocity right?

most of the comment's right-no sonic boom therefore its only on subsonic speed. why? there is a continuous buzzing sound from the jet engine instead of a single loud boom followed by fainter buzzing. the boom is created when the buzz as loud as the one in the video is multiplied by the number of seconds the jet has been flying in Mach 1. simply put it, you will hear the noise from 1 sec. ago, 2 sec. ago, 3 sec. ago, and so on ALL AT THE SAME TIME. the jet flies as fast as sound, remember?

If u actually listen as well as watch video, you will hear camera operator state that he was flirting with the sound barrier. He did not break it.

To out run the speed of sound you have to be traveling around 700MPH or more, What basically happens is the jet foward thrust smashes against the sound waves in front of it and squeez it, This event will create a sonic BooOOOOM.

I laughed when I read the comments about this video. This type of flyby is pretty common aboard aircraft carriers and is done (with prior permission) as entertainment to the ship crew. The plane comes in at subsonic speeds and then accelerates to super-sonic speeds (which is commonly refered to as "breaking" the sound barrier). The shock wave creates the vapor cone when the plane is just reaching the speed of sound. In this case, you do not hear the sonic boom because the plane has already passed the observer before going super-sonic.
