On June 6, 1944, a date known ever since as D-Day, a mighty armada crossed a narrow strip of sea from England to Normandy, France, and cracked the Nazi grip on western Europe.

  • D Day

As far as I know was Debarcation day or the day the allies started he invasion of Europe It seems to be the the most famous battles in world war II June 6 1944 However my farther was killed in Itally May of 1944 and had been in combat since 1942 In north Africa Tunesia and numerous other battles which you hear very little about people seems to think Normand was the only battle that was fought But the war in Italy are far more famous to those of us who lost family and friends there That part of WW II seems to be forgotten since all you here about is Normandy

  • It was indeed an invasion,

the largest amphibious landing ever staged. Battleships pounded the German installations on shore prior to the landing, the weather messed up the plan and many boats landed far from their intended targets. There was a fair bit of slaughter as the first troops were landing. The movie "Saving Private Ryan" gives a fairly accurate image of what the beach must have been like that morning.

  • D Day was not a battle! Or an Invasion.

It was a liberation, an Armada thousands strong, anyone and everyone with a boat helped. It was I think one of the biggest rescue missions in history, to help all allied troops escape.

    • I Think You're All Confused.....

Some of you are confusing D-Day with the liberation of the British Expeditionary Force from the beaches of Dunquerque (Dunkirk) which took place eraly in the Second World War.
D-Day was the precursor to the liberation of France and Europe in the latter stages of the war (1944),

    • Well what D-day was

Was a bit of a combination of everything these people have said. The purpose of D-day was to open a shore on Europe in order for allied troops to be able to breach the European front. Hitler controlled all of Europe, except eastern Russia and Britain. The weakest point on the shores tough was Normandy so that's where we breached.

    • shut your damn mouth

that is not even the same government we have now. it is a completely different time. my father was in that war and he would tell you that he is sick to his stomach to see what is going on today. you have no idea what you are talking about. you don't fight for freedom you fight for supremacy, for one religion, that is not freedom that is domination. you can not and will not ever control another man no matter what you do to his body. his mind will always be free.
