This video shows how you can protect your pc with an invisible switch which will cost less than a few dollars. You'll be the only one capable of turning it on. It can be used on any electronicsl device that has an on off button.
I just made what he said and a good friend of mine still doesn't know how I get my computer on while he can't :)

It's a nice little trick but your buddy who is tring to turn on you pc and can't may keep tring until he breaks your on switch. Then what? You went out to the store you come back and now you can't turn on your pc cause someone in your house be it a little brother broke your nice button. Use a password. :- )
By vinyard7777 1203769084 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveBut I also replaced my switch for a vandal resistant switch. It can take hammers, acid, shotguns etc etc, so I'm not really worrying about my pc :-)
By hanzablast 1204217941 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeits like a key to ur computer nice work
By amrabas2007 1202751305 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeas you mentioned it can be used with many devices, we may even use it even with another type of switches but we will need to find a place for the magnet to be fixed during the usage of the device, we may need a relay incase we wanted to use it with devices that loads more watts on the switch
By great human 1202491978 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveAnywhere. A guy on instructables had some great ideas. Make a 'haunted' coffeemug with a magnet in the bottom that has to stand in it's 'special' place otherwise the TV turns off. The TV is then switched with a relay LOL. Cars would be an interesting option, especially if you combine it with relays, noone will be able to drive your car away then!

By hanzablast 1202498628 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removebut does the switch stay on once the magnet is removed?
By blakeness 1201213520 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThanks for your nice comment. The motherboard only needs a short pulse to turn on the powersupply. The motherboard will keep it on. You only need the magnet when you want to turn your pc on (or off, if you want to do that with the on/off button).
By hanzablast 1201250000 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removehow is that switch called, again?
very nice..just have to try it! 5* is not enougth
Try typing in reed switch in wikipedia, you'll get the whole story!

By Roberto ; ) 1201107774 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIf you like the idea of reed switches, check out my other video "12 euro universal motion alarm". It uses a differetn type of read switch that has make AND break contacts making it much more versatile
By hanzablast 1200920114 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI find it very interesting. Can it be used for other applications? I look to further updates and comments.

By thishaze 1200713880 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeguy!!! Great idea :)
By flexichick 1200690210 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThe hard drive is only a couple of centimetres away from the mag reed switch - although it's probably adequately shielded.
Also, if you take the magnet away, don't do what I did - put it in my back pocket, next to my wallet - your credit cards won't work again.
nice one dude!!! .thanks for the info very helpful......
By creativezen 1200550093 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThanks for the tip.
Btw does it work on cars somehow?
Especially if you use the reed switch to drive a relay which can then handle large currents. You can place a piece of metal behind the plastics of your car so the magnet easily sticks, put the reed switch right next to it.
By hanzablast 1202498745 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveWouldn't this work for a CAR? or just about anything else that uses electricity...
By DV8 and proud 1200451528 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeonly strong magnets efect your hard disk .Relax small magnet like this one does not harm the pc

By ermak777 1200421515 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeyour hard crive i woundnd get one to powerfull you could reck your conputer !!
By 0u8124me2yu 1200362681 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeby it's metal casing. Same reason you cannot put this reed switch behind a metal front plate since the magnetism won't reach it. Your harddrive is safe.
By hanzablast 1200378074 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI forgot to mention in the video that you can take away the magnet once the computer runs. The computer only needs a short press to start running
By hanzablast 1200339251 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removewith the old ones, the on/off button is
a bistable (i.e. permanently on or off_ switch - I wouldn't recomend it for those (although anybody still using computers that old?) .... your in the middle of editing that long document...ooops! you knocked the magnet :) but for the new computers - excelent idea- especially considering that you can conceel the reed switch basically anywhere. 5*
Why all the negative thoughts about the magnet. What about the old type monitors and the magnets in them, The one used hers is nothing in comparison.
By plumberman4u 1200428798 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveWouldn't this work for a CAR or any machine with electronic circuits that can be interrupted by this switch?? Everyone seems to be PREOCCUPIED with what a magnet might do to their computer to think about other uses of these switches..
By DV8 and proud 1200452000 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveYes, smart remark, I've been thinking about that and it can be done. I will work on any device that has a low power switching wire that controls the on off. Laptops, camera's dvd players (although you can also use the remote to turn them on and off). I just don't know enough about car electronics to know where to place it and I don't want to try it on my car. I have one other movie planned with a reed switch to show another use.
By hanzablast 1200476155 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeought to be enough.

By jvagnier 1200276766 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveHow man time have you heard never put mags near your hard drive?? And especialy when most new pc's have the hd just behind the front pannel.
By Slyder2k6 1200280812 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveActually, magnetism doesn't pass through metal. Hardrives are in a strong metal case, so unless you've taken the lid off your harddrive, you should be ok ;-)
Hanzablast
It looks like a nice trick, and you can probably do this without serious harm. However, magnetic flux DOES pass through metal. If I were going to do this, I would get some extra wire and put that switch as far away from any thing just to be safe. And hey, it could also have the added benefit of being in a less obvious spot! :)
By metagenie 1200381968 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIf you're worried about magnetism you shouldn't use your mobile phone near your PC either but you do.. A little magnet like hanzablast was using is not a problem with well sheilded drives and CD/DVD roms are unnaffected anyway, you'll need an industrial strength magnet to harm your drives so relax!
By Rowdyeh 1200380790 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Remove"you shouldn't use your mobile phone near your PC", cause phones are super strong magnets and can stick to metal right??? and for you people who are saying magnets dont go through metal.. take a piece of foil and put it between a magnet and your fridge.. magnets turn other pieces of metal into magnets.
By jvagnier 1201560908 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI've used a mobile phone right next to my PC and had no problems, most PC cases are steel so dont conduct magnetism like aluminium foil would, It would have to be a big powerful magnet to turn a piece of steel into another magnet and that little one wouldn't be powerful enough, so get you facts right. No mobile phones are not super powerful magnets but they do have a magnetic field while in operation.
By Rowdyeh 1201784953 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removei truly feel sorry for shit eating people like you who dont know what the hell there talking about.
notice how the part where i was talking about a phone being a magnet is in quotes. i was rewriting it with sarcasm, and was taken directly from the person directly above my comment.
now take a magnet and stroke a paperclip with it then you can pick up more paperclips with the first paper clip. no that ive proven that it doesn't take a strong magnet to magnetize things maybe you should "get you facts right" you noob
a very smart idea and a cheap effective way to protect your computer
