War is certainly tragic, and man would probably be better off focusing resources to more positive ends. Then again, the implied notion that only the US has these sorts of weapons is absurd. The mainstay American man portable weapon Dragon was a joke by all other standards- the Europeans and Russians in contrast had much more capable weapons.

This is Javelin- there is no way a human operator could shoulder a heavy ATGM like TOW. Furthermore, that T-72 has been rigged with high explosives to achieve that sort of catastrophic effect; HEAT warheads do not atomize tanks like that, and certainly neither TOW nor Javelin is capable of that kind of behavior.

Chemical energy warheads use shaped charges which collapse a (typically copper) liner into into a penetrating jet of metal moving anywhere between 8- 14 km/s at the fastest point in the stream. At this stage, the material strength of homegenous rolled steel or its equivelant is simply ignored: as the HEAT jet drills into the target, material flowing out of the way spalls back into the fighting compartment as deadly incandescent flakes in a similar fashion to a grenade going off inside- ripping into vehicle crews, components, and quite possibly the ammunition magazine.

However, armored vehicles brew up like roman candles (and they will burn for hours) rather than simply vaporize- that looks like a tactical nuke in one huge bursting charge rather than ammunition and propellant charges cooking off.

This is a Javelin ATGM not a TOW. The Javelin is in top attack mode and is fire and forget unlike the SACLOS TOW.

The missile system shown is a shoulder fired Javelin. The TOW is a much larger vehicle mounted system. You would know this if you fired TOW missiles regulary.

Again- they do not achieve their killing effects against armored fighting vehicles by blowing them up- tanks theroretically can survive high explosive hits from much larger artillery rounds and other AT systems, even if the crew inside were turned into mush. A top attack missile such as Javelin bypasses the the heaviest armor across the frontal arc and attacks the weak roof armor- a compact slug intitated by the explosive element drills straight down into the target armor , while the precursor charge deals with any reactive armor such as Russian Kontakt-5 arrays.
