    Without the male lion, the hyenas would be the dominant hunter, predator in east africa, pretty awesome for being 2 to 3 times smaller. Nothing other animal can stand up aqainst the lion and take their kill half the time! The lions need the hyenas to get enough food to survive since the hyena are more successful as hunters.

      Not quite correct. Hyenas are more successful as they eat carrion.
      The Alpha hunter in Africa is actually H**o sapiens, since we first emerged from that far off cave.
      The reason they kill one another is not because of prey- but because of hunting territory and limited food resources where hyenas (a form of mongoose) attack and kill lion cubs, and lions do the same to hyenas in retaliation.
      Perhaps what we are seeing is what H**o sapiens waged with H**o neanderthal.
      But I hate hyenas- they are cowardly, attack only in groups and arouse nothing but disgust as they harass their prey until it's too exhausted- then eat it alive. They'll cannibalize too in a flash.
      They remind me of Africans.
