    Well, this is similar to dark German powder, the technique is a bit different and the results won't be as effective for flash as the commercially produced variety. The reason the commercial dark German powder is so effective in flash compositions is first it is in flake form (as is yours) and secondly the outside has not oxidized making it much more reactive. The whole point of the paper (which turns to carbon making it black) is to prevent the oxidation of the outside layer of the aluminum. Your method allows the aluminum to oxidize before you add the paper/carbon coating which makes the whole process a bit pointless. If you just wanted the carbon in your mixture just add a small amount of charcoal.
