The "Hot Ice" reaction is amazing, but messy and can only be used once. A great reusable alternative of a supersaturated solution are chemical hot packs that you can buy from a camping store. They contain a solution of sodium acetate that can be reset in less than an hour. They are also good as hand warmers, but why would you buy those?

  • Get NaAcetate pads from Hotsnapz-com

    I get them from Hotsnapz-com and also use them for science class instruction. The reaction is reversible by putting them in boiling water. (Reaction reverse >160F) I've gotten good deals on larger quantities by calling. Based on Supersaturated solution of Sodium acetate salt and water. Clicker just initiates a nucleation site for the crystals to start forming in the supersaturated solution.

    What do you mean "Hot Ice" can be used only once? You simply heat up the sodium acetate in a pot or pan and pass it through a filter.

      He said you could find them at Camping Stores, and the only major one I know of is REI, although I remember seeing those at a Sports Authority store several years ago (although I don't think they were the ones he was using.
