Players nowadays are faster, stronger and more skilful than 20 years ago. There are also a lot more people playing football now and that makes it harder to get to the top. If you watch a video of Pele or Maradona dribbling through entire defences in their heyday you'll see how slow and disorganized defenders were then compared to nowadays.
