This dog is the best babysitter. And they don't have to pay him.
I wager that dog will protect that child to the death. As should its parents.
By 1125955065 Reply Spam [+7] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveFirst off, I must say, that I think you are a horrible person to to make bets about this sort of thing.
However, I'm an admitted hypocrite, so I'll accept your wager. If that dog fights you to the death, while you attack that child, then you win, and I'll pay you $300 (US). If that dog fails to protect the child from your attacks, AND also survives while the baby dies, then of course, I win, and I take your $300.
when i was a newborn my parents had a great dane too and that dog would protect me to the death, she even bit my grandpa when he came over to look at me and took down my uncle because he was getting to close, they are incredibly inteligent dogs and are very loyal.

By Ddamaja 1146567690 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveAnd what you didnt see is five minutes later the dog bit the kids face off. Fuking stupid people just let their kids around a giant animal like that, that dog probably cant even relate that that is a human, did you hear it growl at the baby sheesh! I mean I love dogs, but I would never ever do something so stupid like what those people were doing.
By AK420 1145514661 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeyou obviously haven't grown up around dogs. 'that dog probably cant even relate that that is a human' is complete twaddle. Dogs know when they are part of a family, especially over the long term when the child is around for ages (that dog will see the baby every day and know that it is part of the family). I had a dog for 17 years before she died. The dog seeing us as human is irrelevant, what is important is that the dog realises that it is a dog and not our equal. Paris Hilton 'dumped' her dog because he started to think it was a person because it was kept at the same height as her and did not recognize her authority over it. Irresponsible owning. If a dog is ever aggressive towards anyone in the family, and you punish it appropriately, the dog *will* reliase that it will be in the deepest S**t of its life if it steps out of line. When you have had a dog for low enough, deep down, you know if they are capable of biting somebody. You know how those rangers track down crocodiles that have eaten somebody? They track down the ones they feel are the most agressive and they are usually spot on. If you own a dog that is aggressive, no parent would willingly put their child in a situation like this.
Secondly, if a dog growls, that doesn't mean it will bite. Granted, some dogs you can never quite tell. But the parents have obviously owned the dog for a while and they are confident that it is not aggressive. I respect adults who keep their children away from strange dogs because you don't know the dog, or how it has been raised, or if it has had its shots. But it its your own dog then that fear of what you don't understand (which is what you have of this dog) is not a factor and I think it's downright sensible.
you should be a snail... you don't deserve your brain...

My young cousin (4yo) used to pull the dog tail hit him, jump over him & through stuff at him. the dog never harmed him. on the contrary the Dog was always protecting him when my cousin parents yelled at him. I belive that dogs would never confuse a baby with something else & it would certainly never harm it unless it was trained to do that. but its not the dogs nature.

By mariner 1156964706 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down Remove Second, people need to learn about pack instincts.... because that is how dogs think. This dog (and every dog) looks to the leader of their pack for gudance. In this case it appears to be the mother (although, if she is married, it may be the father). Regardless, the mother is higher up the pack order than the dog, and hence the baby, in the dog's mind, is afforded his appropriate status as well.
It is in situation where dogs are mistreated where they act outside of the "pack", btu generally speaking, a well treated dog is as trustworthy and safe as, well, mother's milk.
I was bitten by our family dog and I think I learned a lot about dogs and how they think. Looking back on it I now understand why it happened. Dogs definitely have a ranking system and they feel they are part of your family and there can be competition at times. Sure there may not be a "zero" risk because the Dane is an animal, BUT! what a wonderful thing it is for a child to experience a loving animal (pet) at such a young age.
I love the bumper sticker that says " I aspire to be the person that my dog thinks I am"...

By Taitee!! 1146015135 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removehow many people have a fear of dogs attacking them...
Personally, at the time I was born, my parents had two great danes (sisters). I learnt to walk hanging onto the side of one of them (the other died at a young age of an ulcer of some description). There have been two more since those, one of which we still have, and just recently added a new pup to keep him company. I was about 8 when we got the one after my walking instructor, and (as kids do) gave him a pretty hard time, often wrestling with him, and stirring him up in a playful fashion, and never got anything more than the odd clumsy foot in the face (my own stupid fault), and that is the most highly strung one we've had. The one we have at the moment is just ridiculously easy going and lazy.
The dog in the video looks very similar to a brindle Great Dane, but may be slightly cross bred, the black face isn't easy to see. However, the way it acts is exactly like a Dane. At the start of the video, it is keeping its distance, and has the Danes typical nervous expression when it doesn't want to get yelled out for doing something wrong. The 'growl' it makes when it starts playing is almost like conversation for a Dane, they make similar noises all the time - if they are angry, they'll bark, not growl. And notice the whole time its mouth is shut, its simply pushing the baby with its nose.
All the ones we've had do exactly the same thing, at various times - if they want a pat, they come up and push you in the ribs with their nose, until you pay attention to them. If they want to get on the couch (which they know they aren't supposed to!), they come up to you, and push on your knees/thighs with their chin. When you tell them no, they look accusingly at you, and then start grumbling and poking you in the chest with their nose pretty much like in that video, until you give in, and let them on the couch.
If they're treated well, they are really just like one of the family, and a well bred one will exhibit a scary amount of intelligence, and understanding of human speech, which you won't believe until you actually witness it.
Take for example, the one my parents had before i was born - it ran outside one day at dinner time and barked madly at something, and when my parents went out to look, he came bolting back the other way, reached onto the table and scoffed the hamburgers that had just been cooked, then stuck his head under a blanket on the floor and started quivering in anticipation of getting yelled at!
Dog attacks on younger children occur with younger dogs (ie: under 5-6 years). Usually you want to have the dog you plan to introduce your kids to a few years in advance. So long as in the training you emphasize gentleness and sloth (around people at least) over exhuberence and jumping there should be few problems when you do end up having kids. Size also plays a role as the larger the dog the more difficult it will be for the child to injure it (smaller dogs have a tougher time dealing with children gently). Nothing better for kids than a newfie or saint bernard if you live in a rural area. For city life I usually go with golden retrievers (...check the breeder and make sure you get a sociable pup) or labrador retrievers. I usually find that with training bigger is better. The great dane in the video is a very good example of good training and a good wookie. Touting scary numbers is fun but until you compare the actual risk as a percentage (not just x number of people each year) vs. the reward of a much more enjoyable childhood I would reconsider. Prime example of nosy neighbours methinks ("That can't be safe! Someone should put them away!"). Keep in mind that a great number of the pets you see today aren't properly trained and we do see some mishaps as a result of that (so many jumping dogs....).
probaly got loadsa germs
dirty animal
If the dog had mauled that baby, this would have been much more than negligent...it would have been plain reckless and the consequences would have been as proportionately severe for the mother as they would have been for the poor child. Stupid. And those who would say that I lack understanding of the "pack nature" of dogs or some other such balogna really should grow up.

OMG GASP - child negligence!
see how easy it is to make a stupid statement.
If you have such little patience and understanding with pets that only need to learn to crap outside and not bite people you're going to have one hell of a time raising children. My buddy was raised with a pitbull and my first five years were with a Great Dane that was well known for busting chains or what the chain was tied to. Neither of us or anyone else suffered so much as a scratch from either one.
By bloodhound114 1142314392 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveAnimals can suffer mental illness, just as humans, but it maybe harder to tell. I would let the kid get a bit older. why don't you learn some more facts.....Great danes as with any breed, will become agressive if chained. The dog that killed the lady was chained. And your "all kinds of stories" of danes attacking children are as unbiased as your comment that danes are dangerous. How do you know what the kid did to the dane......where were the parents when it happened, etc. So before you go making some stupid statement, learn a little more. I've had danes for a long time, even did rescue for almost 10 years, even danes that were abused horribly never laid a tooth on me. i could do ANYTHING to these dogs without fear. Sure there is always an exception to the rule, but look at some facts......why don't you do a google search on how many danes are registered therapy dogs or how many danes have recieved hero awards for saving human lives........

no matter how well a dog is trained it can still have snapped and it would take seconds to devistate that poor childs life, you are nieve to think the child is safe there, people should not have children if they are going to put them in danger like that!
By masonenglish 1138255684 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removethe dog didnt need to be trained to be around kids it just had to be trained, my nabor has a dog like that and it has 2 colars a studed and none studed and when its wearing the none studded it will never bite someone, even when provoked but while wearing the studed its in guard dog mode and will try to restrain you no matter who you are or what you do its cool but i gotta check which colar its wearing before i can play with it
if you train an animal fully its brilliant if you half train it then its dangerous
some dogs just love kids

Every breed of dog, and even every dog within a breed is different. Danes are generally not aggressive, but that doesn't mean that they can't be. At the same time, I have seen German Shepherds that were as docile as a throw rug. Basically, the parent felt that her dog was trust worthy enough to play with the child, and she is really the only one in a position to make that judgement. To me, the dog appears gentle and playful, but I cannot say for sure because I don't know the dog.
The mother obviously knows and trusts the dog.
As for the discussions about whether this is safe, well again, none of us can say because none of us know this dog. But I can say this, a dog is like a mirror, you get out of him what you show him. If you treat him gently and lovingly, then even the largest dog (like a Neo Mastiff) can be the gentlest creature. If you mistreat him, then he may, at any moment, be dangerous (even a Poodle).
Second, people need to learn about pack instincts....
that was pretty long winded for a lot of nonscence

By shadowfacedanes 1143948827 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveGotta love those Dogs ....This is just a good example of a loving home. This dog has obviously grown with this family and wouldnt hurt the child. You can tell the dog is having fun.
By 1124140370 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveAccording to the police are dogbites most with dogs and children.. never do this with your child when the dog is a kind like this one or worse !!
By table 1122462037 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeare you so prejudiced about other things in this world?
What a stupid stereotype. i'd trust my child's face with a great dane before I would any other breed.
Again, I must reinforce how VERY stupid it is to make a statement about something you know nothing about. This dog's posture is totally relaxed and non-threatening. No hackles are raised, nothing...about the only damage this dog is going to do is give the baby a wicked raspberry.
This clip certainly brings back great memories. Had a Great Dane, but unfortunately lost her shortly after her 2nd bday. Someone shot her when I was not @ home. Still miss her terribly. The most awesome dog any person could share a home with.
By Jess 1119440808 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI'm sure the person who shot her was "protecting" themselves from this big bad baby killer too, huh??
So sorry to hear about the loss, they surely leave an enormous hole in your heart when they leave us behind.
If any of you that are saying this is dangerous knew anything about dog behavior or about specific traits of dogs then you would know this is totally safe. Dogs have acute senses to whether or not something is going to hurt them or when something is playing, Great Danes are actually one of the most gentle and well behaved breeds in existance. It is actually the best breed you can have around children. Whats the worst? how many people said pitbull? Too many its actuall a dalmation, thats beside the point. Before you comment on something do you research and if you have absolutley now clue then shut your godded damned mouth!

By Doe 1118945344 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveHow many times a year do you read about a child getting mauled by a big dog. Many cases a toddler approaches a dog while he is eating and gets attacked. Or a toddler steps on a sleeping dog and has his face removed. GET RID OF THE DOG, STUPID!
I know, I have facial scares from a dog from when I was two.

By shadowfacedanes 1143907064 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveYou let your pit bull around your little daughter, If I knew who you were I would call DHS on you and have that dog put to sleep and you locked up where you belong. You people are being very ignorant. Yes, dogs do have pack mentality, and if they think they are having to compete with your child for affection, most dogs ( especially pitbulls which were bred to have that loose skin so when they are fighting they can still bite back even if a dog has ahold of them, and to be overtly aggressive and wild, I.E. they are FIGHTING dogs) Will ot hesitate to remove that competition I.E. grab your little girl and shake her by the neck untill she dies. I want to cry thinking about you ignorant people with your pitbulls and little daughters!

By Lady of the Lea 1089458950 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removedanes love to do whats called "nuzzling". it's totally natural behavior for them...not exactly what you call vicious man-eaters as some on here seem to think.
My dane nuzzles me awake every morning.
Personally I don't like dogs, my wife's doesn't do anything but wake you up to take him out and then S**t all over the yard. But when a new child is brought into the family a dog does learn it's place with the child. Our's has never made a move to hurt my daughter, even thougth at times she has pulled fur from his back. He is loyal to her and will protect her to the best of his ability (being only a mid sized Shetland).
By F150 1144406982 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIsn't that against the law??!!! haha just kidding. Shetlands are awesome dogs.
By bumble 1145663149 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveBear the 185 pound, pure black, Great Dane watched over me day and night as well as my younger brother for two years. One guy made the mistake of getting too close to me (rubbed my head) when he was there to sell vacuum cleaners. He wasn't bit, he was simply put on his back looking up at a massive head until my mother came and said it was ok for Bear to let him go. We lived on a farm but as soon as i started to stray too far Bear would stand in my way until I turned around (grass was my limit). He did more than you could imagine when my mom broke her leg. Bear knew I was supposed to brush my teeth, put on my jammys and go to bed at a certain time and he made sure it happened. His stomach was also a great place to crawl up and sleep in. Since Bear I've had Thunder, a 120 pound, floppy eared, howling hound. He never barked, even when he seen a cat (he'd chase it though) and the same thing went for him too. Kids could pull his ears, tail and long snout without him even flinching. He wouldn't get mad and pout, he'd stick out his tongue and pant with a smile because he knew the kids liked it (neighbours' kids). I cried both times I lost Bear and Thunder (didn't run away, they died).
For any idiot that thinks having a big canine around is a problem waiting to happen you should get your head checked and quit beating the ankle biting dust mop that S**ts on your carpet. If it S**ts and gets hit over the head or has its nose smeared in it you're only telling it that shitting is a bad thing....
i think that everyone here that's talking about "dangers" should really chill...you dont know the dog or the family or it behaviours or anything about it so dont be sayin that its a dangerous dog and it could attack a person at any time or anything like that, it could be one of the mot gentil dogs ever, or maybe not but you dont know!..geeeees honestly people
