They originally only recounted select precincts and when they wanted to recount the whole state the supreme court blocked it making charming mr Bush our president. An independent council had already started the full recount when the supreme court stepped in so even though it didnt matter because the SUPREME COURT APOINTED BUSH they finished the recount anyway and guess what? Gore won!!! If you are looking to change the world for the better, there is no one who would argue the fact that you should talk to the United States.

The reason that every other country is able to criticize the United States is precisely BECAUSE of our greatness. No one would care about the US or its policies were we not so great. Few people outside the US spend time criticizing France, though they have AT LEAST as many problems, both social and political, as we do, because France does not have the power and influence that we in the US do.

Keep in mind, though, that I and many others like me here in the US, encourage this criticism and, if it is done in the spirit legitimate debate, find it to be a valuable resource of different points of view. If, however, it is done in the spirit of blind Nationalism, we recognize it immediately and reject it as uninformed rhetoric.

as to the other,.... yes, there are a very small handful of us who can thoughtfully answer yes to that question. BUT, in actual fact, we have smaller, more homogeneous populations, not nearly the land mass that the US has and therefore have done ok, better than ok, at handling our own affairs. so i won't say we could do better, given the same circumstances as the US has/has had, but i also won't give any credit to the US at this point because this shitty spiral of the US's has been going on for some 50-60 years or more now. except for the obivious, (carter, clinton), we've all seen how the americans are lead around by the nose. first this way, then that one. it's very sad and we are sorry for you. we'd probably have even more sorrow to offer you except that we need to save some for ourselves..... why? see my first sentence here

Clinton did not step down, he had reached the end of his second term and was therefore ineligable for a 3rd (republicans made sure of this after WWII when the greatest US President in history, as well as one of the finest leaders of all time, FDR was elected to a 4th term).

As far as being patriotic, it is a GOOD thing! What is not a good thing is blind obedience and inability to think critically of one's own government. However, these things are not the mark of a patriot (at least, not an American one) these traits are the halmarks of conformity and intellectual laziness. An American patriot is one who supports his counrty, wants to see it continuously improve, and will speak up and take arms if needed to see this objective through; even if the weapons are taken up against their own government.

To again quote Mark Twain:

We have more world influence than any country by a very significant factor.

We have the greatest rate of innovation in existence (though this gap is RAPIDLY diminishing).

We still have the finest higher educational facilities (though this gap, again, is being eliminated)

We have the finest scientific research facilities (though the world is catching up due to our poor public schools and the encroachment of religion into science).

We have the best Constitution. The document is a living being that is capable of adapting through time. Though there have been significant changes in our society, the Bill of Rights has remained unchanged (nor has there ever been a reason to change it) for 232 years.

Our Criminal Justice System, though flawed, is still the best in existence for balancing the rights of the accused with the rights of victims.

Our system of checks and balances has done an exquisite job of providing (up until now) a means of controlling government power.

There are many ways that other countries surpass us in particular areas, but in aggregate, we remain the greatest country. To keep that edge, we must begin to learn from the achievements as well as the mistakes of other countries as well as our own and use the power we hold as the powerful force of good that it can be. There is no nation who has the power to affect change that the United States does, nor is there even one that comes close.

If you are looking to change the world for the better, there is no one who would argue the fact that you should talk to the United States.

Unfortunately, you will have to convince our often misguided leadership not to make changes for the worse.

As to patriotism, yes, I am a patriot. But, if you look at the responses to my other posts here, you will see that I am not the blind patriot that you seem to make me out to be. America IS a great country. That does not mean that there is no room for improvement.

Again, if your country was the SOLE superpower left in the world, would it do any better? Do you truely believe that you would act more morally as a nation than us?
