But as a trained goldsmith: the ring goes on the ring finger because the outer finger expose it too much to wear and tear and the middle finger has the strongest grip. In short, most protection,least inconvenience.
Also, Chinese rate parent-child and inter-sibling relations higher than romantic relation, which usually develop out of wedlock anyway, because marriage is very much a rational agreement in China.

the forefinger is represent u are having som courtship to a person
the middle-finger is represent u have settled down the things, just waiting to be married
the "ring finger" is represent u married someone already
the little finger is represent u have divorcement before (on u may also think that those ppl put the ring on his little finger is telling u i dun want to have marriage for entire life becoz nobody wants to tell ppl i have divorced

Wearing a wedding ring on the fourth finger is not a Chinese tradition. Thus, it doesn't make much sense to use an explanation of Chinese origin.
