Use an old telelens, a USB webcam and standard PVC plumbing materials to build a telescope with huge magnification. You can see craters on the moon, read licenseplates far away or spy on the neighbors if that's what you like.
does it work . I will try and will upload another comment if it works
Does what work, I definately see your comment and yes, the telescope works too ;-)

By MOSHEM88 1205507810 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThanks again for a this great video. I spent $4.00 on a couple pieces of PVC, used one of my Logitech 4000 web cams and it was amazing. Rather than looking into space through the eye piece of our 1000 mm telescope it was picture perfect to view the moon and stars on my notebook computer. Not to mention, that if you go to a site like telescopes.com and check under digital imaging you'll see that similar product go from $99.00- $600 .
Great job!

I haven't got anything to spy on here. Besides, if I really want to spy I've got a real astronomical telescope that does a far better job (also costs much more ;-) )

By khalil989 1202781078 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI used an 80-210mm zoomlens for a nikon camera (but that really doesn't matter). Zoom lenses are handy since (obiously) you can zoom. If you want really insane magnification, get a 300mm lens.

By jasontimmer 1202715738 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThis is so simple and has such a clear picture. I am going to have to try this. Five Stars! Great step-by-step and simple instructions. Five Stars!
By mysoccerballz 1202699796 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveYeah, the magnification and performance of this telescope surprised me as well! It's all due to the small image area of the webcam, this relatively increases the focal length of the telelens, so it's a 800mm lens instead of a 210mm or something like that. I don't know how to do that kind of optical calculous, if anyone who does know reads this, please show me how to do that.
By hanzablast 1202728463 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removemagnification factor for telescopes is pretty straight forward.
MF = focal length or object lens/focal length of eye-piece
From what I've heard the normal 35mm cameras have a eye-piece focal of 50mm. This means your 210mm telephoto lens would give you a zoom of about 4x. (i.e. 210/50 = 4.2). Im not very conversant on the exact focal length of a camera eye-piece so the value could be wrong.
Your USB cam should have a much smaller focal length, typically around 5-10mm max. So this should give you about 20x-40x zoom with a 210mm telephoto lens.
Hope this helps.
Reminds me of the first telescope I made with my Dad's spectacle lens and an eye piece of a toy bincoluar. It had a x12 mag and well the best part, you could resolve the four major moons of jupiter. Well you couldnt see much but you still could see a big dot and small other dots. Dude I seriously try this with your telescope, I'm sure it would do much better!
I don't know if this telescope gathers enough light to do that. The moons of jupiter are quite faint, the objective lens of this thing is only 40mm diameter so it doesn't gather that much light. If you use a bigger tele lens however, it should be no problem!
By hanzablast 1202972229 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveExcellent job man! I love creative videos like this... its what keeps me coming back to Metacafe!
thanks! 5 stars!
Metacafe needs more vids like this and less of the fake how-to's, sports junk, etc.
By jasontimmer 1202715901 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI really appreciate it. Hardest thing is to come up with ideas for video's. It's really difficult to come up with something original. If you have any ideas, please send them to me, if there is a simple way to create that idea (it cannot be too complex for metacafe I think) I'll find it and make a video out of it!
By hanzablast 1202728308 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removefantastic 20**
good work i will do this now, make more videos like this please
If I can come up with good ideas, which is the hard part of this. I can make a lot of things, but for metacafe, they cannot be too complicated I think. However, if you have a crazy idea of something you'd like to have, I can try to find a simple way to make it. So just send me a message and thanks for your enthousiastic comment and rating!
