Yeah, this one went really well, at one point it got 12000 views in a day! At least one person on instructables made one and is really enthousiastic so this is a fun project!

I used an 80-210mm zoomlens for a nikon camera (but that really doesn't matter). Zoom lenses are handy since (obiously) you can zoom. If you want really insane magnification, get a 300mm lens.

Yeah, the magnification and performance of this telescope surprised me as well! It's all due to the small image area of the webcam, this relatively increases the focal length of the telelens, so it's a 800mm lens instead of a 210mm or something like that. I don't know how to do that kind of optical calculous, if anyone who does know reads this, please show me how to do that.

magnification factor for telescopes is pretty straight forward.

MF = focal length or object lens/focal length of eye-piece

From what I've heard the normal 35mm cameras have a eye-piece focal of 50mm. This means your 210mm telephoto lens would give you a zoom of about 4x. (i.e. 210/50 = 4.2). Im not very conversant on the exact focal length of a camera eye-piece so the value could be wrong.

Your USB cam should have a much smaller focal length, typically around 5-10mm max. So this should give you about 20x-40x zoom with a 210mm telephoto lens.

I don't know if this telescope gathers enough light to do that. The moons of jupiter are quite faint, the objective lens of this thing is only 40mm diameter so it doesn't gather that much light. If you use a bigger tele lens however, it should be no problem!

Metacafe needs more vids like this and less of the fake how-to's, sports junk, etc.

I really appreciate it. Hardest thing is to come up with ideas for video's. It's really difficult to come up with something original. If you have any ideas, please send them to me, if there is a simple way to create that idea (it cannot be too complex for metacafe I think) I'll find it and make a video out of it!

logitech quickcam 4000 die ik 4 jaar geleden eens gekocht heb. Ik denk dat veel webcams het goed zullen doen hoewel de 4000 ook veel door astronomen gebruikt wordt.

I think sending it will be much more expensive than the whole telescope ;-) Not very economically viable I think ;-)
