i feel terrible for the guy, its always easy to be critical of someone elses error. just lookin at the copilot trying to crawl out the window is enough to bring tears to ur eyes, those things sink like a rock. i hope they just lost the bird and everyone made it out alive and just wet. jeez

  • Information Inorrect

I was actually the Pilot of this 46 and it was not in California as was posted. This was off the USS Santa Barbara AE-26 in August of 1993 in the Persian Gulf. There were no Marines aboard but 5 total crew, the Co-pilot you see looking thru the starboard port is actually a female and all crew survived. I didn't even know this existed until a co-worker looked it up based upon my description of it from a year or so earlier and he was trying to bust my chops. This was also not pilot error but was a result of a faulty Hydrolic Seal that was not know at the time but later caused multiple emergency landings and near crashes in this machine. The 46 has been in service since the late 70's and many have never been upgraded in years. The reason it was being filmed is that all flight deck operations when aircraft are airborne are filmed for safety and to review and debrief after the mission. A flight officer is in the tower where the camera is and rates/grades all approaches/landings to include pilot communications as well as the load master (In the aft the craft) on there ability to secure gear/munitions in a timely and safe manner.

  • It's real.

This happened off the coast of California on a training op. The bird was packed, only a handful of Marines made it. My buddy was one of them. This footage leaked out on the net before the family all family members were notified, uncool. -Semper Fi.

  • Damn

was that an incredibly windy day, like, couldn't they have hovered and aimed better rather than try to slide right into it?
Reminds me of the vid of several planes landing on a horrible airstrip where they had to careen to a landing; some couldn't make it

    bummer :(

  • oh

c'mon they proberly survived. it looks worse than it is.the chopper didn't blow up so they just swim out. their training involves this in big pools with part of a helicopter than can be pulled in and out of water

    • only a few survived

you're right, we do get that training. however it's nothing like this, the real thing. good men died this day.

    • that is

exactly true. I once went to work offshore and we had to take that class. the cab of a chopper and waves and some rubber like propeller. 5's for an accurate comment.
