Its an oud (a luth) the ancestor of the guitar. All through out history, it has not changed much. the first ouds used to be carved out of one log of wood ( Reason of the name oud), modern ouds are made on a ribbed bowl back structure. For a western musician, the oud or any other oriental intrument seems to be out of tune; in fact the arab music has 24 notes comparing to western music with 12 (including the half steps). The middle eastern, greek, turkish, persian and north african music includes what now days the western musicians call the quater tone ( quart de ton). It a quater step note. For example in western music there is only one single note 1/2 step down between the D and the E and that's the E flat. in Oriental music there are two notes the E half flat and the E flat. Accutally it's not exactly a quater tone it's more like 0.33. That's why the best string instruments for middle eastern music are the fretless instument you can get very close to the 0.33 tone. Do you play a guitar and want to try the oud. You can always try this: get a regular guitar and 2 frets from a used guitar. devide the second fret and create two equal frets out of it. the same thing you do with the fourth fret. Now try to paly on it! :-) You can have fun playing some flamenco scales and swich right away to oriental scales without any problem. It takes some practice, once you get the notion of quater tone in you mind, you are ready to play the oud.
