    The reason the ice stays whole, is the two hlaves re-freeze the liquid between the two halves as the wire cuts through the ice.

    this is also an ancient way of cutting ice.
    but they would tap the ice after the wire is through (wait too long after the cut, and it will not separate on the cut)

    that's neat and has a few applications.
