You have to realize, just about any modern tank can be disable with a few Molotov cocktails. The electronics are sensitive. that's why we have infantry screens keeping anyone from getting to close to the several million dolla tank.

In a tank to tank battle, who wins would largely depend on crew skill and who gets a shot in first. as long as both sides have rounds that can penetrate the other's armor.
It wouldn't be a real test of mettle if one's rounds did not penetrate armor as that's like a match between two video game players where one console had its internet connection cut.

by IEDs does not detract from the "greatness" of a tank. No tank is invincible. The Merkava 4 is the best tank for the area it was designed to operate. With Israel's small population, protection of the crew is paramount and speed is only of secondary importance in an area with no wide open fields.

We also don't roll our tanks out in the field alone, tanks are made for formations, tanks infront, IFVs/Infantry back, artillery behind them, anti-aircraft vehicles and air support close by. Since your comparing tanks, I agree that the Challenger 2 is a great tank, but your comparing these with the M1A1. Why? We use the M1A2 now which has a much better weapon system than the A1. But don't get me wrong, I spent 4 years on the M1A1 Abrams

But M1A2 has a better main gun and weapon system, But stills has the main problem poor armour protection in comparsion to the challenger 2.
If your government is spending several million dollars on each tank to be easily disable because of weak points by a RPG, makes in a waste.
Remember the tank is the biggest target on the Battle field, everyone shots at you. Having a good main gun as both the M1A2 and Challenger 2 both have ( lets face it they both can take out anything they encounter on the Battlefield) are great, but sometimes you cannot rely on suprise to defeat the enemy, you have to fight it out. WW2 where the greatest tank battles took place prove this. Tank warfare is essentially the same princeples. The only real differnce is the use of Helicopters. The great advantageous is that the US arm services have the best intergrated weapon systems and platforms. But my concern about the M1A2 if it ever came to a point where it would be face by a similar enemy. I think that it arnour protection is it achilles heal. Remember the german tanks where surperior to anything on the battle field and one on one or even 3 or 4 on one you would lose. The Russians defeated them with good tanks and wait of numbers until they gained air domance. The Allies in the West US, Britain, tanks got slaughtered, only the weight of Ally Air power defeat the German Tank. But as the old miltary saying goes hope the best but prepare for the worst. No doubt that in the next 10 to 20 years that there will be No real converational threat to the West, but History has taught to many times but to be lack in this area is when you lose. If you look at the F15E Eagle not a single comprise on that plane, it is design to be the best overall and is. Remember the F35 and Joint Strike fighters are not in active service. Although the Mig 29 and SU27 are great planes, the F15 is more upto date.
The only real plane that is about to come into service that will challenge is the Eurofighter, but overall the F15E is more flexiable.

The F-22 Raptor in already in service in a few American Squadrons. F-15 is good But F-22 is far more advanced.

Markava israeli tank has been upgraded to Markava 2, which is considered more efficient than the M1A2. the main gun rotates faster, more accurate targeting system (900 meters impact zone 10 cm) and heavier armor on the bottom against explosive charges. The back of the tank is left with less armor because israeli tanks never attack tanks behind them, since they don't venture much into hostile territories and usually attack facing forward (strip and bank don't count-no tanks there). IDF made a commercial for it, search for the video on the net. The challenger is also a great tank, obviously a tank designed to lead an attack rather than support.

modern main battle tanks now day can move and shoot with out any problem. the M1A1/M1A2 is the best tank for that.

Where did the T-80 come from? Iraq never had any. Also yeah T-90 can fire on the run, there is plenty of videos that prove that fact. Also whatever REALLY fired at you obviously did not use the modern Russian ammunition that can slice through American armor even at its toughest point in the front.
