Unless this child is capable of sounding-out unfamiliar words, this is not reading! This is rote memorization, by sight, of the sounds that accompany specific groups of letters (words). A dog can be trained to memorize lists of words and respond by picking up the object that corresponds to the word, but the dog isn't reading.
