  • About Aikido

Aikido is not about fighting. It's about not resisting. You'd never see an Aikido master (if there are any... if you ask a person which has a "lifetime training of Aikido" he'll never say he's a master, he'll simply reply, "I study balance and equilibrium..." or such) fight against a (insert fight/sport name here) fighter, Aikido wins because 'it' won't fight back'... That and because he has more honor than to be in a stupid display of force...

    By Kuroneko 1151208627
    • yeah but . . .

non of the attackers are trying to jab or punch for real. They are all grabbing once then being thrown around. a trained boxer or thai boxer will not be so easily taken down i think. i think the reason aidido is not seen in the ring agaist another discipline is cause it is not effective enough against most opponents who are skilled in other fighting arts.

    • True

If you look at the video, you could see that he didnt gave a direct hit to his oponents, he just used their moves and their weight, in order to repel their attacks.

A friend of mine fought with a guy that knew aikido, after my friend was pushed, tripped and thrown he finnaly gaved up.

      By Zatta 1154071569
  • so..

you guys misunderstand some things. aikido and all martial arts are called arts, cause they are arts, they are not for ufc or pride or k1 and such. ppl who practice martial or any other art have different goals. you guys compare britney spears with mozart, thats what you do. ufc sells stuff, aikido sells nothing. in ufc you'll end with broken body, in aikido you'll end enlightened (eventualy).
FYI, there are no aikido contests and such, only demonstrations.
bruce lee studied wing tsun, and developed a method called jeet kune do later. and im pretty sure that on the street he'd tear the eyes of a ufc guy for less than a second.

    • don't worry

just because of one leg doesn't mean u cannot do that...aikido is not based on strength and power ... u cand practice aikido just for your soul and then ull see that one leg can actually become an advantage and not a drawback.

      By biblup 1146570217
    • i love it

thats brilliant!!! AIKIDO FOR YOUR SOUL!

imagine this. you have one leg and you are practising aikido. for your soul of course - not strength or power. and your mate phones you up.

      " hey what you doin?"

      " im practising aikido"

      "why?"

"to make my soul beautiful and to give me an advantage"

" yer having one leg has its advantages!"

Don't any of you people knoe who this guy is???
well i'll tell you because i can see with my big ass monitor....... it's steven segal and the guy didn't become an international fighting/movie superstar by getting beat by part time ufc co*k boys!! The man is huge and has like four black belts, the hardest man in the universe you read a bit on wikipedia about him and you'll see that he cvan easily do this to people in reality. the man was actually in trouble for taking on the triads!!!!!

  • Martial arts

Some martial arts are just dances or theater like taekwondo u dont use hands u dont defend yourself you are easy to get out of balance!´
whilst Aikido is much more a style u could use for real..
myself im training karate (Shotokan) that i can use.. not just for fighting but u learn to move fast u learn to defend yourself and getting ppl out of balance so u can beat them.. u know where to hit your reaction is increased and most important u learn to figth with your mind.. not your body (means that even the weak guy can be as strong as a giant bodybuilder only by using teqniques),

this does not mean that muscles mean nothing.. but u can attack with your whole body.. not just your arms of legs.. u can focus your power in 1 single blow that can hit through solid objects! i recommend karate and Aikido if you want to learn how to fight and defend yourself! i recommend Takwondo if you want to dance and make a theater and never have a chance to win a fight against a non-retard!

    By Smart Fighter 1155667575
    • tkd doesn;t use hands????

wow, thats interesting cuz i study tkd and i often get punched in the face by the black belts when we spar. in a lot of demonstrations for tkd they do lots of fancy kicks. i'm not gonna lie and say that in a real fight i woudl do a double 360 jumping inverted hook kick. everybody knows yur not gonna do anything fancy. but it does help your balance and control of your body. really there are probably more hand techniques than there are foot techniques in tkd. hell, in the basic forms/ poomses/ katas we learn, there are practically no kicks at all. the styles that don't use hands much would be wtf and itf tkd. those are merely sports. the actual art of tae kwon do is much more than head kicks and fancy spin kicks.

  • SORRY NOT CONVINCED

It looks nice, and im sure its very effective but im not entirely convinced...

    1) The guys he is "fighting" are his assistants,

    2) They are ready to fall down and jump around before he has even finished the move.

    3) I have yet to see a Akida fighter come and fight in the Octagon UFC - because thats the ultimate display.

  • Aikido vs UFC

It would be unfair to match this guy up against the fighters of UFC.

They are trained in mixed martial arts and understand fully well the mechanics of a one on one fight. They specially train themselves for these particular fights.

    This aikido master wouldn't last.

He is very skilled. But the UFC is a different environment.

    By guns1inger 1146849231
    • WRONG

aikido would rip any ufc idiots ufc is only ppl who do fist fighting/ kickboxing/ martial arts....aikido is self defence traing you to counter any move thrown at u and useing there own body weight agisnt them...so in all a ufc fighter would throw a kick or puck and the otherguy would counter it but throwing him to the ground

  • garbage

what an absolutely un-realistic martial art form. Like this guy would'nt get his ass kicked in a real street fight..don't see any aikido whater in pride or ufc.

    By brags 1146429845
    • You got it all wrong!

Aikido is designed to be an ultimate form of self defense and never supposed to be knocking out somebody. It is the art form that takes advantage of the opponent's strength. Hence, you are required to have a lot of skills and little muscle to perform it.
To answer some of the questions raised here, I've seen the clip of the demonstration of over 75 years old Aikido master.
The president of US (I forgot which one, I think Carter)was visiting Japan and saw that demonstration. He got the same impression as some of you guys got and thought this looked to easy to be true and everything was staged, and no way he has a chance against the man with overwhelming strengh.
So he asked two of his huge body guards to challenge him (not at the same time). Old master took the challenge and totally kicked their ass.
True story. I wish I had the clip to prove it. Does anybody have it?

      By Manuke 1147116155
    • yeah, i saw it once

think it was president kennedy johnf . the bodyguard (or some big fella from kennedy's entourage) then took to the stage to "test" the old man, and sure enough....

And for those of you who say that aikido masters are crap otherwise they would be in UFC and kickin ass, well m'freinds, if any aikido master was in the UFC, he WOULD be crap bcos it is totally against the philosophy of the art and it's founder O-sensei.

      By buckaroo banzai 1153123968
    • Actually...

You see it all the time. You just don't recognize it. what you guys who tout the octagon and UFC and Pride don't seem to realize is that the guys in those arenas ARE practicing these arts. Aikido is the art of directing an opponents energy, and in order to do that you have to be able to read the opponents next move. As in -where they're going to attack. Know of anyone in professional fighting that DOESN'T need a skill like that?
Kung fu has many takedown and stand up grappling skill sets in it. The original form was Shuai Chiao, which is an art that was devised to fight an armored opponent empty handed. in a nut shell, you lock an opponentup with a joint lock, then throw them to the ground using the locked joint.
Actually, Most of you would be surprised to find that most UFC fighters do Tai Chi push hands to help with their ability to anticipate their opponents moves. The martial side of Tai Chi has many practical uses, and Taichi is one of the best at developing this skill.
It's Mixed Martial Arts. You do realize that means that they are practicing several MARTIAL arts, right? They didn't become world class fighters taking on local Bubbas at the nearby watering hole, ya know.

      By ogrelee 1149821969
    • omg....

this guy would actually calm anyone in a street fight without as much as braking one arm or leg...

u don't see aikido masters in pride and ufc because that is not the way of aikido...not because they wouldn't handle it...

with great power comes great responsability ...do you actually see professional boxers or fighters kicking asses on the streets??? same with aikido and pride...

      By biblup 1146570024
    • whatever

If they had any pride they would go to the ufc or pride and prove their art. They are not fighters..look how choriographed this is. It's not practical for fighting. They don't do pride or ufc because they are not stupid, and realize aikido is just good entertainment at best. (like kung fu, karate etc) These arts are flawed for real fight situations. Mixed martial arts are the only proven, practical, and effective fighting method. (ie a fighter who is versed in brasillian juijitsu, muay-thai kick boxing, boxing, submission wrestling. etc)

      By brags 1146573809
    • U ARE RIGHT

they are not fighters... but keep in mind that hiting your opponent is not the only way to win a fight...and the only reason what u see is choriographed is because in these demonstrations happen in slow motion..for the public to see .... and aikido master is capable of moving faster than what u see here... and also remember that u practice aikido for yourself..and not for others...the only reason they accept to demonstrate live some of their skills is because they want to attract as many people as possible... if u would actually speak to one such master as i had the priviledge to do u would understand much better than i can explain in 10000 words... real masters are not fighters... ;) xcuse my english (not native)

      By biblup 1146580492
    • Correction.....

      Real Masters Aren't Pro Fighters.
      Former pro fighters become Masters.
None of you really understand the work required to be a pro fighter. Most Fighters these days are Practitioners of several arts at one time. Make no mistake, Most martial arts can be learned in a few years, but take decades to master. (Learned and Mastered are two different animals.) The same goes with the smaller set of skills required to be a Pro Fighter. Becoming a Pro Fighter is a lot easier than becoming an accomplished Martial Artist.
Now let me connect these dots for you guys, both UFC wannabes and TMC nuts. If you are good at your art, you generally DO participate in a couple of tournament fights. Most Artists go in a few times, then stop to focus on the art of their choice.
Some get serious about it, and spend a great deal of time working on the apropriate skill sets. The Pro Fighter spends a great deal of time working on these skills, and their art WILL suffer.
Meanwhile, The artist that quit to work on their art will progress into the deeper skill sets. Learning to use jin and Chi takes time, Gentlemen, or every one would be doing it. This is why a Master knows so much more than a Pro Fighter, And also why it's much deeper knowledge.
The Pro Fighter, however, has A More highly developed set of fighting skills. A year or two after this split, the fighter has the edge in raw fighting ability. As they get older, the Artist will gain the edge, since he is learning to use something other than muscle to power his fighting skills while the fighter is losing his LI, Or muscle power. Usually, the gap is so wide that a Pro Fighter can not catch up to a Martial Artist.(Who at this point is a Master.) RARELY, A fighter can catch up, or an Artist is so naturally skilled that the gap is narrowed. These are rare and Powerful men. For an example, do a Google On Ku Yu Cheong. Or Chen Man Cheng, the undefeated champ who fought into his eighties.
In conclusion, UFC fighters may or May not be the Masters of the future. It all depends on their devotion to the deeper aspects of the art they choose as the core of their style. People, being straight ground fighters definitely is not the way to go. Although ground skills are important, simply being a ground fighter limits you to one opponent at a time preferably on a nice squishy surface. Normally, this is Not practical on the street. Learn to box AND wrestle at the very least. Or get a wider set of skills and spend the time to master them with Kung Fu or Karate. If you want to put an art down, first try attacking a bonafide master on the street, then tell us it can't be used for real.
      Thank You

    • you should write a book

Give the book an appropriate title. then on the reference and bibilographies you write down your sources. Finally, you give out your degree and educational background. Let us know what kind of degree and time spent that you've had in order to present an educated opinion. I'm guessing that you have a black belt or maybe a B.S. in B.S.!

      By sir_komsyzd 1149860061
    • insipid bavardage.

Actually, most of the street fights Ive been in would have gone very badly if I had tried to lock up with a single opponent. In the ten seconds it takes to choke out the biggest guy in the group, the other three guys would be stomping on your face. And don't forget, when you get up to choke out guy number two, three and four are going to pick up where they left off.Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot that all street fights are perfectly fair arrangements between gentlemen, where each combatant waits patiently for his turn.
      Fairy Tales.
Try this stuff on the streets and get your face stomped in. Welcome to my neighbor hood.
Learn something useful in a REAL fight, OR become a Mat Fighter. Try wrestling two guys with baseball bats. knuckleheads. get a clue.

      By ogrelee 1149822654
    • er..

ogrelee. lol your not that intelligent type are you?I'm guessing you got a few brain cells knocked out of you. I wonder why you choose "ogre" in front of your name. Well all i can say is that you are blind. did you not watch that video just now? on aikido? ... the master just took out 3 of his assistants ( yes "assistants") and they came at him at ONCE. they didn't do what you said " wait patiently for their turn", they literally came at once. And most street fighters are like those 3 assistants, savage, and careless.
