  • Coming from a professional driver...

To all the keyboard Rambos. Shut the H3LL up. It takes a lot to drive a vehicle that weighs 80,000 pounds when fully loaded. You'd probably have a heart attack just trying to get into the cab of a rig.

    • The safest thing

to do when there is inclement (Really Really bad weather for those without a dictionary) weather, is to park the rig, and find safe shelter. The rig, the trailer, and even the freight can all be replaced. A human life cannot.

      • I drive a 53 foot tractor trailer.

I see this all the time. A empty or lightly loaded trailer is an easy target for the strong cross winds. The best thing to do is not travel roads when there are reports of gusty winds. I always take alternative routes to avoid this problem but you can get caught off guard. So far I have been lucky. I feel for the guy.

        • As you can see

on the video the trailer goes up first. when the momentum reach the cab
it's too late for the driver to do anything about it. On the drivers mind turning left would just make things worst. like blocking the entire highway and maybe killing someone. It just happen to fast.

            • There should be

a quick release for the trailer.

Just becasue that gets blown over, doesnt mean the truck has to.

                  • I would have tried a couple of things to...

Then I would have parallel parked along side the truck that already tiped. If the wind was going to take me, at least I could lean up against the tipped truck so I wouldn't completely flip over. Finally, I think I would have made a sharp hard left turn. Turning the cab would force torque to the trailer opposite the force that was pushing the truck over.

why dont you travel back in time and fix it? since you are a know-it-all Im sure you might have a time machine as well

                    • Whatever dude

I'm sure all that was going through his head at the time was "oh crap oh crap oh crap oh crap" not "If I turn sharply to the left it'll force the torque to the trailer opposite the force that is pushing my truck over." If you'll note, it probably took you longer to think of that than the time that guy had to do something.

                    • Actually

a trained driver should have thought ahead. Driving a big rig takes split sec thinking.

                    • Have

you ever driven a big rig? I doubt it. I have. When something catches you by surprise like this, it's hard to react. The driver was probably focused on what was in front of him, rather than looking in his mirror to see what the back of his truck was doing. He probably didn't know there was a problem until he felt his cab going. The trailor was already gone.

                    • surprise?

not so much of a surprise when he just past a truck that had blown away...and it would be wise to turn left...
