If I want to make that battery system to replace house electricity, 100 volts..will it work. assuming that a house has fridge, microwave, fan, air con, tv...etc
let me know how to , because it seems a simple cost effective idea...

Allesandro Volta produced a very similar voltaic (from his name) cell in 1791. In his cell the water electrolyte was sulphuric acid. The voltage is produced by copper being far lower than zinc in the electrochemical series, reacting with the electrolyte less than the zinc and thus producing a small current. The farther apart the metals in the series the greater the voltage. Thus is why we have zinc/carbon batteries, nickel/cadmium cells, lithium cells and so on.

when u replace the glasses with a 5 litre canister.Does it have to be glass jar of 5 litre? and .. can u imagine that every time u drink a glass of water u drink one volt??. Good thing that there is no Amps there ..cose from 2 glasses we could die.

How many glasses does it takes to achieve 12 volts? Nice work.

    • How to work it out...

2 cells produce 1.7 volts. So 4 produce 3.4V, so 14 cells would produce 11.9V and 15 cells 12.75. They need to be connected in series as in the clip. But don't expect much current - this can be measured in thousandths of an amp. To double the current you need to connect another batch of 14 or 15 cells in parallel (nor series) with the first. To have 10 X more current, you need ten batches of 15 cells (i.e. 150). To replace a car (automobile) battery you would probably need several thousand batches of 15 cells to get the large current needed to start the starter motor. Hardly practical!
