Some looking for a drummer?
You know... Ive been playing the drums for 7 years now and one thing that ive learned is that drummers are the most jealous people in the world and will do anything to make themselves seem better than someone else. Its sad really. I hate drummers and i am one so what does that say? If you were a true drummer you would see that this kid is pure talent. And for those of you who see that, i respect you. I play jazz, i play heavy metal, i play funk, i play latin, i play it all, and to be honest with you its all difficult. It just depends on what you prefer but you cant deny a good drummer when you see one. C'mon you guys were all in this together. We all like to drum, so why cant you respect eachother? But seriously, this kid is so freakin awesome!!!!!!!!
By kittkatt1216 1137118706 Reply Spam [+6] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI completely agree with KittKatt1216, this kid has got real talent. I dont just mean he's really good, I also mean that he really was born to do this, and you can tell he loves this. nice :)

By Matt923 1110840751 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveHe doesn't seem to keep the rhythm. The whole point of drums is to achieve rhythm.

all you drummers can go green with jealousy as is obvious from some of the bullshit written below... but this guy is undeniably one of the great drum talents of all time..

By hapsmo 1168454194 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveWow, Tony Royster Jr, is some of the coolest people I've ever seen. I'm a girl who's 15, and I really dream of being good at drumming. does anybody have some good websites with tricks, or can you recommend some good dvd's for those who wanna play drums? it's sad, that you have to to start playing drums very early if you want to be very good. I didn't knew much about drums before I was 14, and sometimes I'm a kind of giving up on playing, because it seems so hopeless... could need someone to cheer me up :)
By deajuul 1163101500 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThis kid is seriously amazing. No wonder he plays for dw now and has dvds out. he just has pure raw talent and you can tell how much he puts into playing drums. amazing.
By Woodawg 1162048808 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI have been playing drums for 30 years from 10 or 11 years old to 40 years old and I`m not a every day drumer. I might only play 1 time every few months or a year even. All I know is STICK CONTROL is what its all about. My brother would let me play his John Bohnam set only after I did my LL RR LL RR LL RR for 1 hour. He liked his drum heads and and wanted me to hit them right. So I did it and and all the other rudaments. Well I`ll tell you I know of many drumers that think that play`n a beat to some guys 6 string is being a drumer. And it is but do it knowing what numbers you can mix up to come up with what you need in the end thats a little bit more then a beat. Its Stick control and math Well Mr. Royster Jr. has all that then some... I know I`m all wrong but thats all good Every one to beats to a diffirent drumer.
By RLRLLRRLRL 1156005756 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThat was awa some, Boy you are the great.
Although, you about my age now, i need inspirations from you when i was 12.
Best Performer i'ave ever seen.
I am 12 and i wish i could play like that! im good for my age, but that is off this planet. Good luck!
By Ben.G.Man 1153123042 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI've been reading all these comments from kids bagging / praising Tony on his skill in this video...then they follow it up with..."I've been playing for 5 years...10 years ..... "Well guys, I'm a professional drummer in San Diego, and I've been playing for over 20 years, and have played in Death Metal bands, Jazz combos, Latin groups, Country bands (even got a degree in percussion performance) .... and this kid is a smokin' soloist. Very very impressive. I'm interested to see how he plays in a band situation. I know a lot of talented solo drummers, but when but in a combo situation, they are sometimes sub-par. Not to say that Tony is...I've never heard him play in a group setting. It would be fun to see. But his technique reminds me of Tony Williams, the gentleman he mentioned at the begining of the solo. Williams was an eclectic drummer himself ... sometimes not making much sense in the tunes he played with Charlie Parker and Miles Davis. Let me know if there is a video of this kid for purchase which shows his prowes in a band setting
By sandiegobiker1978 1145421696 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveOk so maybe i came in half way through and havent got the full idea of whats goin on. But Tony Royster Jnr at 12 years of age was outstanding, and nobody can knock him. I have been playin Drums for nearly Twenty years, started of playin Big Band stuff, Orchestral, then Jazz, and now i play in a Punk Rock band, lets say i have played quite a few styles and the transission was not easy, i dont play heavy metal, for one reason, i dont dig it, but that doesnt mean its any worse than any other style, its extremely complex drumming, and would require alot of time and patience to change to, and when u dont dig somethin well that makes it more difficult. The point is, dont dissrespect other Drummers just cause u dont like what they do, if we all did the same thing it would be pretty boring..
By tascam424 1144764091 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI guess you could say im a drum prodigy. i never took one lesson or had neone tell me S**t ive been jammin for about 4 years now and watching this video just pushed my commitment level through the roof. everytime i watch this video its like seeing it for the first time and kinda makes me wanna cry cause i try so hard the only im gunna get THAT good is wit time. i wish i was that kid :P keep on drummin
By drumbumm 1143650971 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveUNREAL!!!
THIS IS ONE HELL OF A DRUMMER
No matter what style of drumming you play or prefer. This kid has skills!!! He's probably better than 90% of you hacks out there. Were any of you this good at 12 years old? I doubt it.
By OFU 1142812834 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveWell, first of all, Id like to say Joey Jordison, is an average drummer, there isnt anything special about him, and thats coming from someone who use to listen to Slipknot, Ive since matured and have come to the conclusion that theres just so many better bands and drummers, and also, you must be an idiot to think that Lars Ulrich had any sorta talent, hes a classic example of poser!, and sell out and i was told from a pro Metallica fan that the "One" double Kick was done on a drum machine? Cause he couldnt cut it, hmm? Since i have stumble across a vault of much more talented Metal drummers, like Derek Roddy from Hate Eternal, Flo from Cryptopsy, Hellhammer, Trym from Emperor and Zyklon, Ryhno from Manowar, Richard Christy from Iced Earth and Death, and for all who dont know, check out a band called Spatik Inc, the drummers name is Bobby Jarzonbek, omg, seriously, thats some robotic S**t Also please, listen to a band called Absu, album Tara, song stone of destiny, its a bit hard to listen to, but just imagine, a 3 piece band from Texas, the drummer is the singer, and omg, thats amazing. From a pro metaler, who is in an Iron Maiden cover band playing bass guitar, playing the drums in another band doing Children of Bodom, sinergy, and Manowar covers, i respect him so much. He is a truely talented musician. One thing that he has over alot of drummers, is feel! Thats normally a genetic thing. So to all who think that hes not great, eat S@#$ and die

he has to be the best for someone playing that fast that lose that well
at his age
he is the best
Check out his solo Get off limewire or any P2P file share..Search for (Dream Theater-Mike Portnoy-Drum Clinic Solo) The File is a little ruff on the audio side but you`ll get the point. He`s as bad or badder then any drumer ever! Well ok there`s Buddy Rich, Billy Coblem and not to forget Mr. Right foot John Henry Bonham
this kid is amazing. id like to hear him now. he ranks up there with thomas lang (buy his Creative Control DVD it will piss you off cuz hes the best drummer in the world), dave weckl, mike portnoy, and danny carey. and to all you drummers out there who think he would S**k on a traditional kit, the double bass patterns hes doing are a whole lot more complicated than you might think. and before you go putting down this solo id like to see you do all that. youre just saying all that cuz youre mad cuz you will never be as good as him (neither will i). plus hes coordinating all of his limbs and incorporation dynamics all around the kit. tony royster jr. is simply amazing.
By chaser 1139378243 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveWhen I was playing myself, I had the privlage to see the great Buddy Rich perform. I gotta say, this kid blows him away!!

By tomb 1138385588 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveOk heres my 2 cents, one you all are right for some reason or another. but at the same time the jazz people are wrong and the death metal people are wrong. I have played in many bands and many styles, including death metal and jazz and from my experiences it goes like this. They are both amazingly fun and complex styles and reguardless of your preference you should see that they are both hard as F**k if you are serous about them. I think that it goes like this jazz is more cerebral and more of a test of timing. Death metal took me a long time to learn for two reasons, one its fast as hell and just learning how to do some of that stuff i had to stop working out during the day, two i had to program myself to operate on a greater variety of timings. In the end theyare both very hard and very fun. and as a final note dont go telling people that their style S**ks just because you dont like it. thats not cool everyone has their own preferences, so dont try and be pretencious, maybe if you listened to the other style for longer than 2 minuets you would see that anyone that can play either style well deserves to be respected.

By gus LUCIAN 1136474867 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removei have been playing drums for nearly 7 years now, and id like to think i can recognise talent (true raw talent) and this guy can really drum, he is better than my all time favourite - travis barker maybe?
let me know if you think he's better!
Big James...
Travis Barker is no where near as good as Tony. I just thought I'd let you know that.
By travis blows 1140240294 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removehe is better, but its all about style aswell, because without style, no one can claim greatest drummer, tony is probly technically better, im not saying he isnt better than travis barker at all, its just travis' style does it for me you know.... Hardcore, raw drumming, thats it.....
thanks for replying, Big James.....
I didn't think anyone could ever outplay Lars Oreck from Metallica until I saw this clip. I can't believe a 12 year old boy now has my attention on the drum line. This is a truely talented kid and I'm sure he only got better as he has gotten older. God Bless you kid.

I see there is some contraversy over Tony's age. He was born Oct. 9,1984. I'm posting this on Dec. 10, 2005, so that would make him (drum roll please): 21!! I hope this settles the argument. Check out his OFFICIAL stats at www. tonyroysterjr. com

yea of course this kid is good, heez so good that every time he hits the snare, he hitz it in the exact same place every time. buttt as you can se for almost the entire time his double bass pedal is goin. not traditional, not talented. if you took out the double bass at the fast parts, there would be just unorganised noise. still, extremely good for twelve, if you put him on a kit like bonham used, he could do a quarter of the S**t that a real innovative drummer could do. this kid is basically a black neil pert and really young. i agree with a previous comment, for inovativeness with primitive technology, bonham rules

(im a guitarist i dont know much about drums, but that doesn't mean im completley illiterate on the subject.) he did speed up a little bit, but its almost unnoticable. no matter what tony plays, hes always gonna be better than almost any drummer today. i rank him right behind mike portnoy.. noone is as good as him. and, i used to be a huge slipknot fan so i know what im saying here: Joey Jordison is good, but not as good as Tony Royster Jr. lets face it, joey cant keep the beat like that. period.
By 1127713766 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeu know ive been drummin for about 3 years (evr sence the sixth grade)and i am now in the 9 th grade and can do all that with a single bass pedal(just not as fast as he can do it)but ive got drummers bllod in me and oblivisoly he does too, u know he does have a great drumset too by the way

Seriously he's good
anyone who says that death metal drumming takes no skill is a retard. has anyone of you morons ever heard of joey jordison? what about the rev.? sure it has alot of double bass but you try and keep a steady beat on the double bass for a whole concert. jazz=S**t !!
By 1126914835 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveJoey jordison is S**t , my mate has been playing 7 years and can play his solo, slipknow are shiyt aswell.
By georgefirth 1148750386 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI agree wid ya man but am rlly sorry but joey jordison isnt rlly a death metal drummer or in slipknot he aint n e way. coz slipknot play nu metal
By Ghandi 1142010382 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeit is hard to keep a steady beat specialy with the double bass going If you don't belive me try it...oh can't come on you just sayed that it's easy right... thats what i thought. By drum boy 1141143676 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removedo you no that death metal actually isnt that hard?!? WOW! All u do is make a hole buncha noise. And jazz is pretty much the foundation of death meatl. Big band swing ended (or rather, took a huge dive) in the 40's. Rock took over in about the 60's, but jazz was still strong. Acid jazz mixed with distorted rock created heavy metal, which, in turn, created death metal, which is wherea buncha freaks ensure their place on the dark side of heaven so they can have cheap concerts with no real music. QED
By 1129500447 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removelyk shite death metal aint dat hard. to keep in tym to as fast paiced music as death metal yu have to have alot of speed and skill and it is very hard. listen 2 angelcorpse - demon seed. and jazz in no way wot so eva is anyting 2 do wid death metal. yu say metal came about in the 60's but death metal came about in da late 70'sand acid jazz isnt anyting lyk death metal. I meen cum on have yu herd any death metal bands. I agree der is alot of different types of music and I appreciate dem all but wot yu have just said is a load of bullshit
By Ghandi 1142010164 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removefirst of all i want to say that i have seen this video before and this second time i see it i still say that tony is a kick ass drummer and he surely dont complain about death metal vs jazz, me either and i play in a death grindcore metal band called inhumed we are doing really good... also i have played power metal , clasic rock, modern rock, flocloric, jazz , and all i can say is that you have to learn from all styles !!!!! all of them !
if you just learn jazz you become too sparky drummer... if you just learn death metal drumming you become too brute and heavy.. you have to learn from all types of music and let it go ... just let your hands relax and your feet too and start doing what your soul asks for...
tony royster is a mixed drummer, he is not a jazz one thats the reason he is so talented. beacuse he learned form all styles.
first of all, Joey Jordison is NOT a death metal drummer. he's in slipknot which is numetal. on top of this, he's a mediocre drummer. REAL death metal drumming (druming by people like Jan Axl von Blomberg (aka Hellhammer) and Nicholas Barker requires extreme skill. however Jazz requires more coordination than the coordination to play blast beats really fast. Real Jazz drumming requires independence of all limbs which is something most death metal drummers dont have or need. think before you make dumb comments
By 1128289903 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeyour right in sayin death metal is hard but jazz drumming requires far more skill ..i suggest you play a bit more before making ignorant remarks
By 1128092862 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThis kid one the national guitar center drumoff at age a 9 and was the youngest endorser of Zildjian at age 12. I found a site of him playing and demonstrating for like 20 minutes and there are other amazing drummers on the site. He got accepted into berkelee at age a 12. Go to gospelchops.com and go to the shed section and click on thomas pridgen. He and tony are eqaully as good. I love there playing.
By 1126487691 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removetom sounds pretty good but have you heard of ed holcroft he's F**king awesome and he's only been playing for three years...imagine what he'll be like in ten¬!!
By 1128093049 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveOh S**t , don't know if this motivates for practicing or frustrates
By 1126442804 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI only saw this video earlier this week, although I've heard of Tony Royster Jnr before, nothing can compare to the feeling you have first time you see this video. Style of music and his age now are irrelavent comments to make when such an extraordinary talent is concerned. I teach kids to play drums every day and most do not have the drive or enthusiasm to practise enough to achieve this level of facility on the instrument. I believe the adult world should be encouraging this kind of talent, not dissing it like so many people on this site are. Fact is he was 12 when he played the solo - which is completely awesome!!

By 1126033346 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removethats the most amazing thing ive ever seen. u gotta have your head way up your arse to dispute that kids talent. i dont care how long uve been playing, find me 1 other 12 year old who can bust that S**t thats insanity and dont u deny it
By 1125990236 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIve seen this many times before, but not once left a comment. *Swoon*
By 1125931380 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removewho cares im the best drummer in the world no one can touch me!!!!o
By 1125617666 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveOk... To settle this argument for those of you haven't heard of this guy before, 1997 is about correct - Tony Royston Jr toured with Dennis Chambers at about this time, I've seen many dvd's and clips of this guy before!
Finally... I've been tutoring drums for 7 years around the Uk and I've not yet seen any 12 year old come close to this!!!!
So... I have to say I'm impressed. I've been playing for about 5 years and am completely self taught. I can say that I can't do that. But I dont want to talk about whether he's good or not. I think the vid speaks for itself. But everyone on the board seems to miss the whole point of drumming-- it's not about the chops you do or don't have. It's about the energy, the emotion, the touch, and the feel of it all... Who cares if he's faster that someone else, or slower than death metal drummers. If that's all you're looking bor in a drummer, then you've missed the point. And it doesn't matter what style you play either. Drummers from every style connect with their music in different ways, and that's fine. It doesn't matter how they connect with it as long as they do. Stop arguing about chops. Chops and technique are NOT music, I dont care who you are.
yeah. he can play so well at such a young age. i believe he is gonna be like me one that. hey kid, you're really good. keep it up your good work and keep improving. Learn from different other drummers.
not many people can do that at his age and I'm sure many of you can't so SHUT UP! Don't criticize unless you were better!
By 1125444647 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removei was better then him when i was younger....he looks like a beginner to me
By dan2 1135462034 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThis kid is the F**king greatest drummer of like all time if he keeps up with drumming he will become a beast
By 1125328163 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThis kid has a god given talent for drumming. Hes so much better than any of the other guys u watch on TV n S**t .
I havent seen him play recently, but he must be a billion times better now. He must be total pro by now, but I still have not seen a better drummer than BUDDY RICH. Some of my favourites are Dave Weckl, Thomas Lang, Dennis Chambers ETC. And screw death metal the best drummers in the world play jazz. Thats real music.
Wow this kid is amazing, all u F****ts saying he S**ks , like u really think u could do that good, he's 12, he's better than so many hardcore drummers that r older than him, unless u actually got talent, which i bet u dont, dont b goin sayin S**t like he S**ks , cuz that kid fuckin rocked
By 1124915001 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI know this is an older clip, I really don't care about how old he is today. It's about how old he was then. The kid in the video, freakin amazing! He makes it all look so easy, not even breakin a sweat. After watchin this clip, I wanna just hole-up in my drum room for a month or so... amazing!
By 1124551912 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThe drummer is great given his age, but he is not what I would call the best. Ever hear of a man nammed Yoshiki Hayashi? now that man can put up a drum solo. 8 minute long double-bass onslaught that never faulters, including jazz hits, and pain.
IMO the greatest drummer alive.
was there any at all?
By 1124447610 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveJack, have you ever even tried playing Death Metal drums? Death Metal as a genre has some of the best drummers in the world. Normally, it's the idiots like you, who can't play Death Metal drums, who like to put Death Metal drumming down.
Yeah, this kid is good, especially for his age, but as someone who has been playing / listening to Death Metal for 16 years, I've definately heard better. I know you are a fraud, because nobody who can actually play Death Metal well will put it down as a simple style.

By 1124350044 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveMy ex-girlfriend, whom i'm still friends with after we broke up (although its been a few months since we've spoken), was going out with Tony, and probably still is. The one time I met him, he was with her, and he was wearing a shirt that was actually my shirt, that my ex stole from me... so that was kind of funny.
So he can play the drums, and he's getting it from a girl that i know from experience is a blonde freak in the bed.
I can't believe you idiots are so shallow to look past the sheer talent and argue over how old his is today. Who gives a s*it?! He's 18, OK? He was born in 1984.
<what a bunch of dicks>
I am apalled by the amount of total F**king nitwits posted comments here. Save a few intelligent remarks, it makes me sad to see humanity being so repugnantly stupid in a reply. This kid is amazing at the age of 12 playing that well. He is 20 now? I wonder if he got any better, I didn't delve into it so I haven't much room to comment on that but this at 12? That's utterly amazing. As for Death Metal Drumming, it's all energy, with the bass drum and doesn't require a lot of skill. Sometimes they aren't even doing the bass fully by themselves. For the person who said he should drum for Blink 182 or Green Day... rot in hell. I like green Day and absolutely hate blink 182 but my opinion doesn't have anything to do with my point... they both aren't tremendously skilled, this guy is FAR beyond the skill of those bands. Yes Blink has a good drummer but the stuff he actually plays for the band S**ks ass. See him when he's not playing their songs, he's a lot better. The kids good. End.

I saw this clip maybe 2 years ago..
I think it is somewhat impressive, since he is/was only 12 years old...
but..
Maybe you should try listening to some classical music, and you would see that this kid is nothing comared to what a classical drumplayer can do. They have skill you would never dream of. You probably just never hear it..
hey dudes i would watch the clip but the libary computers in iowa are F**king S**t rock on S**t faces
By 1123938278 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removemaybe nod bad..but if u compare it with a little bit more complicated styles of good jazzdrummers it is just nothing. sorry, but his "tricks" (even today, the older royster)can't impress me at all.but for non-musicians , it's always nice to see a 12 y old boy who can play paradiddles so fast...

By 1123186964 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveTony is a fantastic drummer with amazing control,,,, In the end drumming is just like speaking, Tony knows this, and if everyone else thought the same then you'd be drumming like that too. Its just control, the less effort you put in the easier it becomes. Check out common ground and listen to the first 30 seconds of niles where tony diplays alien control on the drum set....

I would like to see how is beating drums at 25... congratulations to Tony at 12 and right now!
