Strange
The mound, texture, size and the color looks more like black ants. I'll be they would put anything in a fire ant bed here in Florida. I've been bitten by several... 8-20 and the damage was much worse. The damage does not look like fire ant damage. Still, I agree, putting a hand in the bed is very stupid. Also It is nearly impossible for an ant to bite with your hand under the dirt. Did you notice that the welts were all above ground level?
