            • Atomic Shrimp It applies to pretty much every brand. by Atomic Shrimp, 1206312960 Report sent Spam Reply [+1] Thumbs Up Thumbs Down

Although I think it applies more so the type where the print heads are not built into the replaceable cartridge, as the printer needs to invest more effort in keeping them clean.

But that's most modern inkjets - the type with heads built into the cartridge are not common now.

              • cthulhubob Amount wasted varies... by cthulhubob, 1207682002 Report sent Spam Reply [+1] Thumbs Up Thumbs Down

...from brand to brand. Epson printers like this c60/80 series are notorious for wasting huge amounts of ink. Their ink design is prone to clogging so they use more ink to keep the nozzles clear. Canons use about 1/4-1/2 as much as the Epsons, but still waste a fair bit. Hps tend to waste the least and some of their newest models are finally getting to a lower cost per page than the Canons. As long as you don't need to do any photo printing, and with color Lasers getting to Sub-$300, a laser is a much better investment.

Best option (IMO) is a mono laser for documents and take the digital photos to the store to get them done on a dye sub machine or whatever it is they use there now. Or just distribute the digital photos to friends and family on a DVD slideshow or put them on a photo hosting site.

              • PKproductions Yeah. by PKproductions, 1206495015 Report sent Spam Reply [+1] Thumbs Up Thumbs Down

My family spent the $500 on a true laserjet. It only prints in black, but the total cost printing a page is about half or less of what it costs to buy ink. It also doesn't have to squirt ink out to keep its heads clean because its a fine powder that it sprays onto magnetized areas of the page and then baked on.

I love it. It's like guilt free printing, and it prints beautiful blacks.

By the way, may I ask what brand is the printer that used for demonstration in this clip? Hope its not related to the brand i'm currently use

                      • Atomic Shrimp I'm not too keen to reveal the brand... by Atomic Shrimp, 1206347806 Report sent Spam Reply Thumbs Up Thumbs Down

... although it's probably not too hard to work it out from the appearance.

All inkjet printers of all brands do this to some extent - there is no other way to clean the nozzles except squirting ink through them.

The worst culprits are probably those where the print heads are fixed in the printer (not replaceable as part of the cartridge).

what do you mean it stores all colors? do you mean individual color cartridges? those are good, as it gives better quality and does not waste the less used colors as much.

It does that ever since the very first inkjet. It's called priming, and it does it every so many characters.

thats very interesting because i have that exact printer and that same problem. i didn't know of a waste ink reservoir but now i too have to do some investigating. did the problem go away after you cleaned up the waste ink situation? or did you end up fixing it yourself??

                                            • Atomic Shrimp The printer didn't survive the operation by Atomic Shrimp, 1206389909 Report sent Spam Reply [-1] Thumbs Up Thumbs Down

Partly because I just wasn't even trying to save it, but partly because it wouldn't work without some kind of firmware reset anyway - there's no sensor telling the printer that the waste ink is full, the printer just knows it is, because it's kept track of the number of cleaning cycles - there's a 'waste ink counter' - probably resettable if you're determined enough. I wasn't.

There's also not really any easy way to disassemble the printer sufficiently to purge the reservoir without being quite likely to break the printer.
