    you look closely to the plane you see the after burners are off and if i was a pilot i would turn them on for more power (and don't say heat bla bla with the after burners on you fly away from a missile so the missile will run out of ''fuel'' and crash in the land)

      The maximum speed of a F/A 18 is only Mach1.8 instead, but most missile could do upto Mach3. That's no other fighter plane could escape a missile attack by meant of speed but manoeuvreability is the only way out.
      The only plane today that could escape by a missile attack by meant of speed is SR-71 (Blackbird) the American spy plane which is capable of doing Mach3.3 and at a maximum height of 21,300 meters where so far no missile could bring her down from that level.
      The scene of this movie "Behind Enemy Lines" is like adopted from the true story of a documentary TV shows call "Downed Pilot" on Discovery History chennel.

      The speed of a guided missile could anytime doing upto Mach3, whereby the F/A18 is only doing Mach1.8 maximum. So no way that the F/A18 could escape from a missile attack, infact no other fighter plane could do better then a missile.       Are SAM - Surface To Air misiles, they rely entirely on the heat givin by the aircraft, thats why they dumped the fuel tanks which made a huge fire ball which was of caourse hot. And in responce to Dreetje, they couldent use thier burners again beacause they didnt have enough foul after the jettison

      I'm not sure about how SAM's work, but I'm guessing it tracks heat or something because they dropped the fuel tanks to make a big fireball to make the missiles go for the fireball. Ask one of the experts, or do research or something.

      beside the heat problem there is the fuel, not only the missile's fuel but the f-22's fuel too, the burners will consume most of the fuel - not mentioning the fuel tank which was dropped - and it's along way back to there battleship

      It's not an F-15 Eagle......this is an F-18 Hornet.....It was launched off an aircraft carrier earlier in the movie, F-15's are only used by the Air Force, not Navy. I agree with the SAM speed though, the missile would over-take the plane in a matter of seconds.

      missiles arent as nimble as the aircraft you make a hard turn doing 400 knots and the missle doing top speed mach 8 or whatever, its going to come out to wide and miss the plane.

      you can't out run a missile unless your in an SR 71 and thats only because by the time the missile launches and gets to your altitude its run out of fuel. thats why these guys were doing manouvers to try and loose the missile. turning into the missile is used because it can't manouver well enough with the combined closing speed. now the guy's that have balls would be the weasels. lets go destroy sam sites by making ourselves targets. Nuts. F15's go mach 2.5? didn't know they were that fast. learn somthing everyday. looked it up and you are rite.

      any one ways speaking of the endurance of the missle. The missle would have been out of the picture the first Maneuver made. Simply speaking of speed vs speed. I spent 3 1/2 years on a Navy Air Station and became friends with several F18 Hornet pilots. I too would have been a pilot if not for failing the Hearing test in Baltimore.

    for people that don't know what SAM is, it stands for surface-to-air missile: a guided missile fired from land or shipboard against an airborne target n yer umm
    the pilots tried to used "Decoy flares" .. its a drocarbon compound plus gelling agents are placed in a photoflash cartridge. a primer in the base of the cartridge is fired to propel a piston which forces the gel out of the cartridge through an orifice plate. The expelled hydrocarbon compounds are then ignited to form an infrared source for decoying a seeking missle

    This scene just ain't right. First of all, the SA-13 Gopher ( The Surface to Air Missile System used in the movie - wich is real ) is IR guided. It has a max range of 5000 feet and a minimum of 500 feet. The missile can go Mach 2 ( the Hornet CAN outrun it, just not this close to the ground! ). The Missile is way to close to the plane in some scenes and it seems to have some sort of super maneuverabillity, cause it looks glued on its target.

    NOT everything is real in this scene.Hooray Holywood!But still f***** gr8 scene!The fighter jet is an U.S. Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet.And missiles CANNOT reach speeds of Mach 8,NOOBS,they're not spaceships!!Missiles like that (SAM) can reach mach 3 tops.For example an SR-71 Blackbird would easily avoid (outrun) these missiles due to it's superior speed(excess of mach 3)-not to mention the altitude-.but the f-18 can reach mach 2 (with a/b),so we can't say for sure.also,some missiles have a 90 degree 'sight',so if the fighter can actually pull some hard G's and get out of that field then there's a very high probability of losing the missile.Of course these things change as technology does.Dreetje,you are WRONG big time i explained why before.and even without the fuel tanks they could use the a/b's but for a short period of time.But the missile cannot perform stunts and maneuvers like a snake.If that scene was for real(in it's duration)the missile would have landed already.

    American fighter jets are only specialized in their computer system.. But they do not perform as good as in this movie.. Even the new type of FA- 18 cannot compare to Russian fighter jets such as MiG 29 or SU 27...

      mate, listen im a Australian Air Force Pilot who happens to fly the f18 hornet. The super hornet is more than capable of executing this scene. as you might not be aware of the superhornet is now the main fighter for the USN.

      maybe thats why the have the new f22 and jsf 35? maybe the f18 is why they had to develop th newer migs? this may be a leap for you but its called an arms race. if they did not develop their equipment we would not develop ours and we all would still be flying biplanes. as for the migs being superior with manouverability I think the americans delt rather well with that issue in vietnam. what was the kill ratio there?
