      they have to ask you if they can search your car most people just agree assuming that if they say no then the cop will arrest them on suspision or go ahead and get a warrent. if you are ever stopped by the cops for anything and they ask to search your car, just refuse based on the second amendment and ask for a lawyer and tell the officer that you will submit to a search once the officer can secure a warrent. most cops will not have a judge woken up at night to get a warrent to search a vehicle based on a speeding ticket.

      they don't get search warrants for cars. IF they did, it would take day - no WEEKS - and you would have to be without a car while it is impounded and collecting impound fees and towing fees.

      Ask any cop, they can seach your car for almost any reason.. .you were sweving, had a light out, they THOUGHT they smelled alcohol, you were shifty, they thought they saw something in your car when you were getting your registration ...etc, etc. Still, tell them no but their defense is that if you say no then you must be hiding something, therefore they have reason to seach.

      Actually, they can't. I know because I work with cops as a reporter for a newspaper, and have even gone along on some ridealongs with them. They can only search your vehicle if they have "probably cause", which may include the dog catching a whiff of some drugs and going crazy or finding drugs on their person. Having a DUI, however, is definitely not probable cause for a vehicle search, nor is being "shifty". I think you're the one watching too many cop movies. Usually cops don't have much trouble though, because as the previous poster said, most people assume that when a cop asks them if they can search their car that they can't say no, which is BS. If a cop could search you car without your permission, they wouldn't ask .. trust me.

      ok i have been pulled over for going 20 over and i had shit that shouldnt of been in my car the cops ask to search and i told them no and they told me to have a nice day gave me a ticket then walked back to there car so yes you can say no and yes the cops do have to have a warrant to search

    Unless there's some inside information police already possessed. In any case, police doesnt check to that extent (un-screwing the body of the car etc.). So i guess that checking was pre-planned for that car.
