Ants don't think by the way. They're little computers pre-programmed to do certain things. They don't feel or think. And if ants really were that size they would easily pulls us down holes like that.

as many others when i was a kid i was sometimes a bit cruel without reason and we made with alcohol a ring of fire around ants, they stayed in the circle (if they don't feel nor think why they didn't just keep walking till get burnt? My gess is thay they somehow "felt" the heat and that "thought" - S**t , that's hot! I rather don't walk this way! and they probably also thought - this kid is a bastard! why doesn't he light his throusers if he thinks is so funny?

Self preservation is a basic instinct from every life form from a bacteria to a whale. Is does not indicate intelligence. Besides who cares it's ants just step on them and be done with it :)
