I've been buying hardened masonry nails for this, but they're like 10 times the price of ordinary ones.

That's not masonry you're hammering into, it's obvious from the uniformity of the pointing, the fact the surface doesn't chip or fragment when you hammer, and in the close ups you can see it's a synthetic board
