    Well if you want to know the truth, if the Japanese had the atom bomb they would have used it on Pearl Harbor and other parts of the USA. And to add to that if any of the other countries had the ability to drop a nuke on us they would. us off the face of the earth without the possibility of retaliation they would. We must keep an eye on nut cases like Iran and any other peace loving nation.

      One of the Japanese General officers is on record as saying that if they'd had the atomic bomb, they'd have dropped it right off in the initial attack at Pearl Harbor. I forget who it was, but he made no bones about it. It was just a matter of fact--'Yep, if we'd had it, we'd have used it.

      It's pretty easy to pass judgment 60 years later on the decision to use atomic weapons, but at the time the world was on fire and to the US, that seemed like a good way to shut things down and end the war.

      The alternative was several more years of the bloodiest conflict in human history (which the US didn't start, by the way).

      End of story.

      And then I visited the Peace Museum in Hiroshima and saw the results of the bomb..
      I think it is important to see the results of it before judging whether it was a good idea.
      There is also some debate about how long the war would have gone for had it not been dropped and also some debate about how much of the decision to do so was to show the Soviets what the US it could do..
      Before any gung ho people unleash their aggression on me, i am just recognising that there ar vaious points of view on this.

    We've dug every country out of the ground more than once. If we dropped a bomb on Japan they deserved it for Pearl Harbor. Why not show the inoccent people who died there?       Neither Hiroshima nor Nagasaki were really "civilian" targets. Both cities had operations that directly aided the Japanese war effort. True the people were civilians, and the areas were largely left untouched bu conventional bombing in order to give a more accurate reflection of the bombs devastation, but they were not, by any means, innocent of any war efforts.

    but there was a war going on. Not a little war, total war. And not a war we started. People die in war. Bombs get dropped in war. Cities get destroyed in war. War is hell. It was in order to end this war, this bloodshed, the deaths of untold millions of men, women, and children, that we dropped this bomb. The alternative was a marine assault on Japan, which would have made this look like a paper cut. Also, it should be pointed out that once the war was over, we forgave Japan, and helped them rebuild, so that now they are one of the most prosperous nations on Earth.

    You know, Japan was given a warning. America was S**ker punched.

    We dropped two bombs. The war ended. Yes, innocent people die in the war. That is an inevitability in any war, no matter how big or small. If we didn't drop the bombs, would have been a land invasion. Innocent people would have still died.

    You know, neither Japan nor America holds grudges over the past. Time moves on. Two nations live in peace.

    I am a US Army vet. It does not make me a warmonger. I am a firm believer that, in a time of war, there are things that, as unpleasant or even horrific as they are, need to be done.
    People make a huge deal of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but we did far more destruction in Germany. Anyone ever heard of Dresden? We did far more destruction that both atomic bombings combined on March 10, 1945 when we firebombed Tokyo.
    And to be perfectly honest, Japan was sueing for peace 2 weeks prior to bombing Hiroshima. The real reason we dropped the bombs was to keep the Russians in check.
