knows that this match was not won by France, but lost by England. England were all over France for the best part of 90 minutes, but usual kamikaze defending and David "Calamity" James' s goalkeeping handed it to the French in the dying minutes. Zidane was by far France's best player on the night, but it was far from his best performance. It's a bit like saying the 'flu is the best virus to get. While an excellent player, he is somewhat overated when people claim he's on a par with Ronaldhino, Pele, Beckenbauer and the like.

There was a Fifa poll voted by Professional footballers (something ur not) and Zidane was voted the best ever European player. His style is unique and has grace and beauty. Long live Zidane. Zidane is one of the greatest players, if not the greatest player of the last decade. And thats what classes a player as great. To be at the top of the game for your entire career, winning the biggest trophies in the world and been seen by your opponents as being the best does class him as great. He has won it all both for club and country and with his vision, technical ability, grace and skill he is feared by and team he plays against. Of course now, coming to the end of his career he is starting to slow down but he is still a treat to any defence. Ronaldinho is the worlds best now but he is nearly 27 and still is no where near what Zidane has achieved. He is a great player and who knows, if he stays at the top for years to come he will be up there as one of the greats lie Zidane. Only an English man would say Zidane wasn't great and what do they know anyway!

Ronaldhino is Brazillian (South American). He is unlikely to win best European player ever, then, wouldn't you think? Zidane is considerably older than Ronaldhino, so it is little surprise he has achieved more thus far in their respective careers. I agree that Zidane has been an excellent player and will be a loss to the game, I simply don't agree that he is one of the all time greats. Gordon Banks was a good 'keeper, however we have moved on and in time Paul Robinson will show that he is world class. and i have to say, England are not world Class. And we play the most boring football in the world. We so defensive we just let teams take shots and shots at us in the last 5 minutes in hopes of hanging onto a 1-0 win. Hopefully this footage will show England need to change their football style from a 5-4-1 to a 4-4-2 or even a 3-5-2, so they're more enjoyable to watch and their attacking style may even bring more good goals.

it was a good affair but this was englands loss. The french team in those days had lots of talent and luck to somehow always come up big in the matches. But the thing is nobody on the french team is french except for maybe pires. all the black players on the team are either nationalized from africa, or carribean islands, or are first generation. Zidane is middle eastern/african from alegeria maybe that's why the annoucer kept saying praise allah. The team though is great and thumbs up for france for being diverse. Everyone remember 1998, 2000, and 2003, golden generation of kick-ass French players. That's when all the Zidanes, the Henrys, the Pires, and the Desaillys all started popping-up and owning everyone in Europe.

You might have enjoyed this game, but it was hardly great. It was quite a dull affair, really, with a few moments of note. Why do so many people on here claim "you don't know anything about football" when somebody disagrees with them? The people using this accusation seem to have a pretty limited scope and memory for the game as far as I can tell. Next you'll all be trying to claim that Thierry Henry is the all time greatest playere same breath as asking who was Johan Cruyff!

i agree, it takes more than a free kick and a penalty at the end to class it as one of the greatest matches ever. I think what he means is that it was one of the greatest comebacks at the end of a game. It was a dull and fairly boring game till the end. Great comeback

that's true, but one of the greatest matches ever? don't think so. netherlands - brazil 1994, italy - germany 1970, italy - brazil 70, netherlands - argentina 98, ussr - belgium 86 still rank a lot higher in my opinion. and that's only in international football.
