As for taking land who's land is being taken, I don't believe any country in the west has any plans or desire to stay long in Afganistan or Iraqi and as soon as they quit trying to blow up their own people , I'm sure everyone will be on the the first train out. I sincerely hope both of us are still around to see a free Iraqi voting for their leaders and reaping the benefits from their resources that saddam pissed away . So Bin Laden and Taliban were a legitimate insurgency force when the Soviets were OCCUPYING Afghanistan, but when the US military is occupying Iraq (for no apparent reason, truth be told) then the insurgency is not legitimate? Aha, right. Bin Laden took that strike against the US over its military presense in Saudi Arabia. Kuwait did not need the US and its allies to defend it from Iraq, the ally involvement was only to ad legitimacy to the US real result for its involvement: oil. The only real reason for the US in Iraq is to control one of the most important commodities in the world: oil. Zarqawhi and Bin Laden are just a ruse, a carte blanche for the US to fight "terrorists" that in any other time, place and circumstances would be "legitimate fighters."

The US got its allies involved in the first Gulf war to add legitimacy to the real reason for its night in shining armor involvment: Oil. There are dozens of countries that can use some aid and intervention from the US but these countries have nothing that the US would want to loot. I see I'm going to have to educate you on Bosnia as well, since you obviously are clueless about it. First of all...Bosnia was bombed by NATO, primarily the US, but was NOT occupied by UN troops. You see, if you had studied it even a little you would know that the UN troops who first went in were before the airstrikes. They were at best ignored by the combatants, and at worst, captured by them and made human shields. They allowed safe areas to be overrun and massacred.

It was NATO, not the UN that occupied Bosnia after the bombing campaign. Which, by the way, was primarily due to american influence. To listen to you, the US stood back and let NATO do all the work while we just got fat and happy selling weapons. Wow, your bias and narrow view is second only to your lack of historical knowledge. The US has invested Billions...read that BILLIONS in Bosnia for no other reason than to keep the peace. We still have the largest contingent of troops in country. In short, my liberal leaning friend, no progress was made, and no massacres stopped, until the US stepped in and told the rest of Europe to follow us. They couldn't even fix a problem in their own back yard without us. Talk to the serbs on the ground. Oh that's right, you only read about these type of things, don't really know for yourself do you? They'll tell you how the only thing that made a difference was when The US, not NATO, not the UN, but the US threatened them with force. Check it out yourself. There is plenty of data on it. You seem to be a very knowledgable character so I would like to ask you a question. Not to start anything just to see if you can honestly answer it. I'm going to asume you are American so I would just like to know what is America doing in Iraq? Thats it. Thats the question. Just what is America doing there and why?

I do appreciate your direct question. It deserves a direct answer. At least as direct as I can give you. First let me start by saying I have no political agenda. I'm not a dyed in the wool bush supporter. I have my own opinions about the whole thing. You'll forgive me in advance if this is long winded but the answer is not as simple as people would like to think.

Here we go:

The reasons we are there are primarily twofold. First, saddam violated virtually evey tenet of the sanctions placed upon him by the UN back in 91. Essentially the UN authorized further use of force up to and including removing saddam (ie: 'regime change') if he failed to adhere to the agreement. For 12 years he failed to agree. Firing hundreds of times on coalition aircraft, violating military import sanctions (thankyou france, germany, russia, jordan, and a host of others), continuing to violate the no fly zones to attack dissident factions, etc. That in itself, though not dramatic, or perhaps motivating enough, was reason enough, should one choose, to invade.

Add in the now questionable intelligence on WMD's and terrorists, and you have trouble in the making. Here's something to think about; History will judge whether the intelligence bush used to justify the invasion was skewed by him, or claimed him as a victim. Remeber, the same US senators, Congressman, and media moguls now decrying Bush's use of single source data to justify a war, had access to the exact same material he had. As did all of our allies. I don't recall much of an outcry at that time about it. Seems everyone fell for it. I'll be the first to admit, now that the truth is out, it was shoddy intel work to take the work of only one source without corroborating evidence. Very bad work.

As for all the conspiracy theories that bush just wanted to invade for the oil, well, I've yet to see anything substantial on that. Though I truly can't rule it out. Conquering another country for it's natural resources is not a new thing limited to the 21st century.

Now, personally I don't think the war was necessary. But that's strictly from my historical point of view. At the time of the invasion I just don't think he was that great of a threat. Even if he had WMD's. Here was a man obsessed with staying in power. He wasn't dumb enough to hand a nuke to a terrorist intent on blowing up D.C. and leaving baghdad as the return address on the bomb. For example, the reason we got him and not osama is he was a head of state. We at least knew where to look for him. Likewise we knew where to nuke if a terrorist even remotely connected to him had pulled off a WMD attack in the US.

However, WHY we are there is now an academic point. The deed is done, right or wrong, and now our energy should be spent deciding what to do about it. Pullling out, as many implore, is short sighted and naive. (to be continued)

Yes the UN did authorize further use of force by the UNITED NATIONS. Not the USA. Lets not forget its the United States who invaded Iraq WITHOUT the authorization of the United Nations. And it is this respect for the foundations of the United Nations that many countries that are Americas allies chose not to join this unsanctioned attack on Iraq. Canada for one has decided to stand side by side with America and its allies in the war on terrorism in Afghanistan but refused to attack Iraq without the United Nations. What hope is there for the UN if we don't respect its decisions.

Concerning the "intelligence" presented on WsMD, it was clear to a lot of people that it was a sack of lies. I mean really! I don't remember all of it but one piece that stands out is "mobile Nuclear process ing plants". who the h e l l came up with that one. I also believe that the United States is the last country in this world that should be dictat ing who should and should not be able to possess nuclear power (for what ever reason they wish). Let us not forget that America is the only country to use a nuclear bomb against another. Against civilians as well. Personally I believe whoever was responsible for those actions should have been up for war crimes. but where were we? ah... NO everyone did not fall for it. I do remember many countries speak ing out against it and incredible protests by the people, the true governments of many different countries. I remember so many times be ing amazed at the determination and dedications for standing up for what they knew was right, and then be ing shocked by the government or senators or congressmen calling the protesters unpatriotic, traitors, or un-American. when the whole time all they were doing was express ing their opinions and beliefs as is their right in a truly democratic society. The strongest test of ones patriotism is whether he or she is will ing to stand against their own government when what it has done is wrong.

I stand beside you when you say that this war is not necessary, and that we now need to decide what should be done about it. It is clear to me that the attack against Iraq was unjustified from whatever angle you look at it. The United States should never have invaded without UN authorization and should be held accountable for their actions. Murdering someone is still illegal is it not? What the USA has committed in my eyes is murder and those in power at the time should be on trial for their crimes against humanity.

I would also like to say if feel it is childish to point fingers at france, germany, russia, jordan, and a host of others as you put it for sell ing military weapons. Has America never sold a few jets to Israel, a couple of stingers to Afghan rebels, a few M-16s to whoever was pay ing and

Yes the US is probablly the strongest country in the world maybe, but it is kind of hard to measure as America never really takes on countries that can put up a good fight. N Korea for example. the second they said. if we see any US build up near us it will be taken as an act of agression against us. America left them alone and is attempting to work things out democratically. Why didn't they try that with Iraq?

As I was saying America may be powerful but what America chooses to do with this power is what will be remembered. Whether or not America gets neutered you will be remembered as a country that starts wars. And even if America is powerful piss off enough people and you will find your not so big anymore.

The world will definately continue to change without the US might as you put it and in my opinion for the better. Canada is not a big powerful country but they have the worlds respect for their actions. Something I feel the US does not. You have it because of your weapons and your willingness to use them without thinking.

The removal of the only stabilizing force in the country would result in massive internal turmoil and strife, and perhaps even the long sought after civil war. At the very least it would turn Iraq into a major jihadist training ground. That would result in more death all around the globe. After all, the deaths and sufferings of the Iraqi people can be put into some sort of perspective if all works out well and the country stabilizes. If it spirals into self destruction because we pull out, then we have only fueled the fires of terrorist hate and justified all the propaganda they use against us. One needs only to look at somalia. We broke and ran (thankyou clinton) after only 18 US deaths. We're still trying to overcome the international impression that we can't 'hang in there' and accomplish the mission. In Bosnia I was told over and over again that if 'they' wanted us out of there, all they had to do was kill a few soldiers and we'd turn tail and run.

Picture the US without any international credibility for the next 50 years if we fail in Iraq. Is that such a bad thing? You bet. Despite what all the anti-US crowd would have you believe, America is still the strongest voice in the world community. Whether it be for good or bad, change rarely happens without the might of the US, mililtarily, politically, or economically, being brought to bear. I just don't see the world becoming a better place if the US is neutered in the eyes of the world. Yes, credibility does matter.

We can rant and rave on both sides of the issue as to IF Operation Iraqi Freedom was right or wrong. That won't change one single death in the country. Using our collective energies to come up with a reasonable and practical solution is what should occupy the thoughts of all serious minded people. Why are we there? Because Bush convinced the US and it's allies we should be. Why did he do it? Was he sincerely convinced he was doing the right thing? Where there ulterior motives? They/we were in bosnia to stabilize a country that had ripped itself apart through genocide and ethnic cleansing. The UN was unable to since they are "peacekeepers" not "peacemakers". NATO stopped the killing, created and enforced the Dayton Peace Accords, and stood guard while the EU rebuilt what was left.

I'd be interested to compare how much the US makes on arms sales to how much it's putting out for it's military actions and propping up these places we've bailed out around the globe. Why don't you research that one?

So what if we went to Kuwait to liberate the oil supply? That's what sovereign nations do. They protect their resources. oil is really only a small part of how a country profits from a war. I am no expert but I beleive when a tank gets blown up or a plane is shot down it will need to be replaced. when a building gets blown up or a bridge I assume it will need to be rebuilt. who will get the contracts to do these things. As in Iraq every single contract for rebuilding the country went to an american company I believe. When the government spends billions to blown things up its not there money there spending....its yours. but how can they get their hands on it. by awarding billion dollar contracts to companies owned by friends who then invest into other companies owned by government officials or their families. spend money, blow things up, get contracts and get paid to fix the things we just blew up. Why do you think Halliburton is in Iraq?? Halliburton is a major oil company that has been dealing with Saddam when the US was still friendly with him. When that picture of Rumsfeld and Saddam shaking hands was taken, guess who was representing Halliburton? Go do some reasearch on Halliburton and see what you find, you have to look no further than its on and "off the books" exports and truly irregular accounting practices....

You obviously don't know about the active plans to build a pipeline from Iraq to Israel??? Or the satellite images showing that the US is siphoning oil by way of Kuwait? Or the active exports to US friendly countries (aka oil laundering)? Diverting oil this way is actually "Stealing" so do you really think your government would admit to stealing oil??

Iraq was crippled under the US led sanctions, hence they were not able to tap into all their oil reserves. This is a fact. However, a country like the US would have no problem mobilizing oil drills and pipelines to start oil extraction. Oil moves economies. All this time I have been thinking that Halliburton was an oilfield service company that does casing cement jobs, CO2 injection work, oil well logging and casing perferations, and other work related to oil well completions. The Geneva Conventions afford "legal force" by their updated protocols. In time of war, these are protocols that should be followed! The US would be the first to cry foul if the Geneva Conventions were violated against their military by an enemy! However the US has clearly tossed those conventions aside. As to what I think should be done in Iraq. The RIGHT thing to do would be to pull out immediately and pay the price (literally) for reconstruction of Iraq. And learn a lesson from this huge mistake. What I think the US admin will really do is remain in Iraq, get more oil flowing, appoint contracts to mostly American companies, continue to monopolize OPEC and sales of oil exclusively in dollars, and continue to intimidate any world opposition. 4- All the Terrorists and Freedom fighters (which you brand as also terrorists) are at large

5- Instead of soldiers slowly leaving Iraq, they are slowly growing in numbers again

6- Bush and his poodle Blair are loosing public popularity

8- Iraq is now deemed the most dangerous country on earth .. some "liberation" heh!

The terrorist issue is far more complicated to be discussed here. everybody fights terrorism instead of fighting its causes. Question: who holds the power in a theocracy? Answer: the clerics. First of all, it's rather exagerated to say that the us government ( i said th government because there is a big difference between the common american and the government ) "freed" iraq. Why didn't they free north coreea? or Cuba? or Somalia? or some other third world state struggling under dictatorship? Or why didn't they kick saddam's ass in the first gulf war? I don't think anyone has sufficient information to pass judgements on the real cause of invasion, but one thing is certain, it's not freedom in iraq united states are after, nor terrorists. Let's think objectively.... politics is not idealism. the idea of freedom and u.s. as a big democratic brother is dust in voters's eyes. but no country would spend so much on a war just to free another country. And europeans should keep it shut too, it's not only the us that has blood on its hands. european oil companies too are interested in iraq, you don't think it's tea you're filling your car with, now don't you? History lesson... Following the Soviet deployment in Afghanistan, Soviet troops were unable to establish authority outside of Kabul. Almost 80% of the countryside still escaped any form of effective governmental control. Their initial mission of guarding cities and military installations was then expanded to combating the anti-communist Majahideen forces. Using primarily Soviet Reservist.

Due to the Soviet Union's inexperience with fighing in mountainous terrain they were met with great casualties. The fact that they had no anti-guerilla training only added to their difficulty. Their military equipment, particulary, armored cars and tanks were ineffective and vunerable in the mountains of Afghanistan.

The Afghan guerillas were armed, funded and trained mostly by the US and Pakistan. Most significantly was the donation of the American-made FIM 92 Stinger anti-aircraft missle system. The guerillas were able to fire at aircraft that were landing and taking off from airstrips and airbases, which greatly increased the losses of Soviet aircraft.

The international diplomatic respsonse to the Soviet invasion was severe, including the threat of boycotting the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.

In late 1985 the seven principal rebel organizations formed an alliance in order to coordinate their attacks against the Soviet forces. The inability of the Soviet Army to quell the rebel forces, gain a significant number of Afghanistan supporters and affiliates, or to rebuild the Afghan army, required the ever increasing use of it's OWN forces to directly fight the rebels.

In 1988 the governments of Pakistan and Afghanistans, with the United States and Soviet Union as guarantors, signed an agreement settling the major difference between them. The document was the Geneva Accords.

The soviet union fought to occupy afghanistan for 10 years and ended up losing against the taliban and mujahadeen. Interesting though.... it only took 2 weeks for the US to take the Taliban out of power and completely occupy the countries populated areas..the Soviets at the height of their power took 10 years trying to do that but couldn't even make it 150 miles inside of afghanistan.

People don't understand how hard it is to find a single person in a country as big as Iraq (300,000 sq miles), that is like a needle in the haystack. The reason we found Saddam though is because he was a conventional leader who had conventional means of hiding himself, and that is what the US is good at: Conventional War! Not rooting out single individuals in huge countries with 20 million people.

Saddam Hussein was found because one of his top aides tipped it off to US forces.

For all we know Zarqawi might not even be in Iraq, but instead just tapes videos of himself whilst in hiding elsewhere and directs terrorist attacks from far away.

Who supplies these terrorists? Um hello! Syria and Iran! When US forces have found weapons caches in Iraq many of those weapons were made in Iran or Syria. Plus, long before we even invaded Iraq was just one huge weapon dump, pretty much all Iraqis had their own personal AK-47s.

People just watch the news and nitpick certian convenient facts without taking it account how incredibly difficult it is to stop an Insurgency.

The US military is designed to destroy another countries military, not go on wild goose chases. The US military in a conventional war is invincible, but NO military in history has actually done as well as America is right now when having faced an Insurgency in such a populated country.

Interesting fact to wrap it up: America has been in Iraq for 3 years and has lost 2400 troops. Germany occupied france for less than 2 years and lost over 200,000 troops to the tactics of the french resistance! Can you believe that? Even the french did better against the germans than the Insurgents are doing against US forces!

Actually very insterestingly, America has lost less troops than any other occupying force in such a large scale conflict in recorded history. Thats something you'll never hear on the biased news we have these days.
