You can't just say i need new camo and get it the next day. The first Iraq war was our first desert war. As such we did not have desert war gear before the war. You can’t instantly get stuff it has be designed and made. That takes time. So you get guys fighting in forest gear for a time while the proper stuff is made and disrupted. They at least have the desert helmets on. lol

All the troops have it now. When troops go over by ship all of them on the ship change uniforms the same day. I remember we used to say the trees are gone but now there is a big sandstorm on the ship. The navy guys still wear blue because we stay on the ship.

shouldn't they have been prepared before hand? I mean going to war wasn't a surprise, it had been in planning for months at least. Plus they had been using sand coloured camouflage in '91during the Gulf War so they should have the design ready and all they had to do would be to order the uniforms. I mean to order it a week or two before going to war doesn't make much sense. There has to be other reasons for which they used the camouflage they did.

Ok the reason these guys were in green was the stock system. Yes there was desert camo in the store houses before the left. Getting it to the troops can be another story. Red tape you know.

I think the worst part of my time in the navy was dealing with supply and the stock system. It is getting better but still S**ks . You will never government processes without red tape though.

They had the camo but it takes awhile to get stuff through military stock systems so the first ones over didn't have it. They did have the right color helmets though. The way they do government contracts and the stock system creates a lot of inefficiency. I bet at one point the camo they needed was sitting in the same building as those helmets. lol


When i was in and had to deal with it I used to say "This is why communism doesn’t work". When you have one source, no competition, and try to make it fair. You end up with crap.

I mean I remember hiring 3 companies to do the same thing because the one that would do it right got underbid twice. Then when the first two failed they still got paid. Or wanting for months on parts I could go to a hardware or radio shack and buy. Also the cost of them through the stock system was 3 times what it cost to get them in town. Sometimes they were even the same brand could we use the ships card to open purchase them no. Not unless we could prove it was an emergency. Then there was a bunch of extra paperwork.

Even the bidding system is odd. If the owner or CEO of your company is female or a minority it takes a percent off you bid when compared to others. So a company owned by a woman could bid higher then companies owned by a man and still get the job. Also quality is really not figured in. I mean sure if they completely F**k it up sometimes you can get them on the list of companies not to use. Other then that it did not matter.

Oh man... that's hilarious. It should be noted that our Canadian troops did the same thing in Afghanistan but they eventually stopped because of the jokes people made back home. We have an excuse to have poor camouflage because of our already ill equipped military but the U.S military should have none.

LOL.. Our Canadian troops didn't have the sand coloured camouflage ready in time like you said so guess what they did, they used large "Tan shawls" to better blend in with the environment. Or they spray painted their dark green uniforms. At least the new uniforms they have now are much better.

logistics is alot more complicated then most people think. Everything takes time, and goventment things take more time then the same task in a civilan company would.

The sand- coloured camouflage they use now is the same thing. They can't even be detected by infrared detectors. I think at first the government said the company didn't have the technology to mass produce them.
