  • That's not a river...

    ...that's the San Francisco bay. You can clearly see Alcatraz in the background. This video was taken at the Fleet Week air show that takes place every October. I've personally been out on the bay during Fleet Week and watched the Blue Angels perform passes that low, and yes it really is as amazing as it looks in the video. On a side note... they are not going supersonic, and the cloud is just water vapor.

      Do you realize how big those jets are? They are around 60 feet long and 45 feet across. The bird is closer to the camera than the jet and in no danger of being hit. Unless of course the bird is 30 feet across.

      I've been in Military for the Last 4yrs. soo i have a little idea! I said it got hooded in the sense that it looked like it. If the jet would've hit the bird there woulda been feathers everywhere.. But thanks tho!

    In the first second or so of the clip you will see a sea bird that flies so close to the aircraft that it is sucked sraight down to the water in the wake. Anyone want to guess what the outcome of a birdstrike at that altitude might be?

      The word "jet" is only indicative of what type of power plant it has.
      All aircraft are planes....even helicoptors, whose wings rotate to produce lift, rather than are pushed through the air to produce lift.

    This is one of the Blue Angels during their last exhibition flight over the San Francisco Bay. The Golden Gate Bridge is to the left of the first image in the movie, and the pilot pulls up turning left towards the Bay Bridge. This was the year that one of the pilots flew low, between buildings in the financial district. You've got to see the Blue Angles fly!

      At the speed required to produce the moisture at the leading edge of the air wave, it has to stay out from the people for their safety.

    Aircraft is nowhere near super sonic. The "compression wave" is nothing but water vapour pulled up by the Aircraft pass close to the water. I have a photograph that was given to me when I worked at the Airport showing an aircraft flying close to the surface of a lake and pulling a V shaped wake behind it.

      Ever heard of the "Blue Flame"? It is in the museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. It is the first CAR to break the sound barrier on the Bonneville Salt Flats, back in the late Late 1950's.

      Altitude has nothing to do with how fast you can go....power does.

    Q:What are the fastest and slowest speeds flown during an air show?
    The fastest speed is about 700 mph (just under Mach 1; Sneak Pass) and the slowest speed is about 120 mph (indicated speed)

      If you stop-start the vid and watch your middle left side, it's a seagull, but it didn't come close to connecting with the jet. It soared into the picture at about the same time when the jet's air displacement disturbed the water. It only looked as if it hit the bird. The bird was quite safe.

    That is one of the Blue Angels, US Navy Aireal Demonstration team. What he's doing is a Mach .9 low pass.

    They are only allowed to fly that low in very limited airspace and over some even more limited areas near population centers, such as over a river, lake or other open body of water. They have to dial it back a bit once they are directly over population centers unless they gain enough altitude so as to not affect them. Mach one (+) flight over population centers is restricted by the FAA.
