Maybe they preheated the kernels and then quickly placed them on the table and the vibrations from the cell phones, notice they are all set to vibrate, caused them to pop. That sounds viable, but it would require very precise timing, but who knows how long they practiced it, how many takes it took, before they timed it perfectly.
