This situation is where one combatant is knocked down, and the other remains standing up. I will demonstrate how to get back to your feet safely while an opponent is standing over you throwing punches and kicks.*NOTE* DO NOT break your fall by slapping your forearms/hands against the pavement when breaking your fall on a hard surface like the street or sidewalk, . You can injure yourself. Just bend your knees, tuck your chin, and roll on your back. You should ONLY use your hands/forearms to break your fall (like I demonstrated on the video) on a soft surface. - Johnny Rock Stah

    • Dude

The title says Street Fight, of course in a street fight you would do everything! We're not talking 'bout a MMA fight...

    • ok...

ur right about doing anything in a street fight, but the way u described to get up would get u a couple of good knee strikes and kicks to ur face, unless you have some kind of amazing experience in fighting to back it up, you really cant say that you know what ur talking about.

    • lol.

Well you seem to have very much experience in street fights. In a street fight I wouldn't look at him protecting my face with my fists while he's on the ground but hey, I'm not a pro. I'm just a random Jiujitsu student :)

  • How to stand up in a street fight..

Like that you showed how to defend yourself in a situation where a person is pushed to the ground. Great fighting techniques, easy to follow and understand..keep it up!

  • No Bueno!

Worst thing possible you can do. First of all if the guy is kicking you in the face your arm in the way is not going to do anything except get your arm broken, second of all, why stand up in front of them? Just looking for trouble. This guy needs some real Martial Arts training. I am available if you want some real training, and you are in the Southern California area.

  • Thanks

Very good video guys. I remember doing these very same techniques in jiu-jitsu awhile back. While obviously it's not a good idea to go to the ground in a street fight, there's always the possibility of ending up there, and you have to make the best out of the situation. Obviously you are at a great disadvantage in this position, and your options are limited. With such very limited options, these techniques are by far the best things you can possibly do in a situation like this. And I agree, I would love to hear from anyone else if they have any better techniques. Very informative video guys, thanks for sharing your techniques with everyone!

  • I fight MMA weekly and I must say...

... that this is a terrible instructional video. The whole thing is ridiculous. Sorry man I fight inexperienced fighters occasionally that attempt things similar to this and it never, NEVER works in their favor.

    • Tell Renzo this move is ridiculous.

Well...if you're fighting "inexperienced fighters occasionally" then I'm sure they pretty much S**k at everything. Just about everything they try against a "Weekly MMA fighter" such as yourself is not going to work.

Go to youtube.com and type in "mma pride 8 kazushi sakuraba vs renzo gracie last round CUT".
At 1:48 in the video Renzo creates just enough space to get back to his feet.

This move I demonstrated has been proven to work. Got to youtube.com and type: Renzo vs Oleg

At 1:10 in the video you’ll see Renzo fall to his back. He then up kicks Oleg almost knocking him out.

I guess this move didn't work for Renzo either, huh?

What move would you suggest doing when your opponent is standing over you throwing kicks and trying to punch you? I'm always willing to learn new techniques. Maybe you can describe it to me or make a video?

    • Flaw in Gracie Ju-jutsu

I agree this is one of the several flaws in a very good newaza based system. I have rolled with several of the Instructors(no names please) of the gracie system, and this is one of the flaws. If you want to know how to do this correctly? I am based in the Southern California area and would be happy to train you in traditional Ju-jutsu techniques that are missing in their system.

  • my opinion

you guys look like good fighters. You are agile and know some moves. Id like to add my thoughts - its not an attack against you so don't take it personally. its just added ammunition that you can try.

first, I would not put weight on my hand like that -- especially if it was against multiple opponents.

your hand can get stepped and wrist / elbow, or shoulder broken.

Conversely, I teach my students to LOOK for the hand plant like that when the hand is down - step on hand with one foot, kick or knee in the face with the other, or go for the elbow break etc.

if you want to keep the guy down, step on anything thats on the ground -- limbs are more vulnerable when planted with weight on them.

2nd, on the street, there could be anything there, glass, nail, rocks, etc,

I dont want to be on the ground in a street fight but if I was, I likley use scissor, double leg take down to bring my attacker to the ground with me.

Personally, Im comfortable on the ground or standing up but once the attacker is down, I would then get up -- especially if there were multiple attackers. If only one, maybe I might try to be a hero and wrestle with the guy if I knew I was better. I wouldn't advise that to everyone but I would personally - maybe S**ker for punishment ;~)

    • Single attacker, not multiple attackers

The purpose in this video is to demonstrate how to stand up in a street fight against ONE attacker, not multiple attackers. I would need to create a whole separate video with different techniques to demonstrate how to fight off multiple attackers.

The only way your hand, wrist, or elbow can be stepped on is if your single attacker runs around you. It's not going to happen against a single attacker. If an attacker tries to run around me (or gets too close to me) then I'm going to my back and throw bicycle kicks to their face. I'll rock up and plant my hand ONLY when I created space between me and my attacker.

I'm not teaching people to automatically fall on their backs when pushed. I'm going to try my hardest to keep my balance and stay on my feet. I don't want to be on my back in a street fight, but there's always a "what if" situation. What if you loose your balance and fall back during the scuffle?

When you fall back you don't have a choice where you fall. You might get cut or scraped (by glass, nails, or rocks) when you fall, but I'm more worried about my attacker kicking me in the face and knocking me unconscious. I rather get kicked in the legs (while on my back) than in the face.

Going for a wrestling move like a double or single leg takedown while your attacker is standing over you is a very risky move. You’re in danger of getting kneed in the face.

This move I demonstrated has been proven to work. Got to youtube.com and type: Renzo vs Oleg

At 1:10 in the video you’ll see Renzo fall to his back. He then up kicks Oleg almost knocking him out.

    • Kazushi Sakuraba vs Renzo Gracie

Also go to youtube.com and type in "mma pride 8 kazushi sakuraba vs renzo gracie last round CUT".

You'll see Renzo Gracie demonstrate this move in a live situation. Renzo takes some punishment to his legs while on his back, but he's protecting his head and face. Yeah...those leg kicks will hurt and sting, but I rather get kicked in the legs rather than get kicked or kneed square in the face.

At 1:48 in the video Renzo creates just enough space to get back to his feet.

    • Sorry...

but it looks like you missed the how to READ section. There is that one little part in ALL CAPS that says *NOTE* DO NOT break a fall with your arms on pavement! Besides... isn't that common sense. HMMMMM....
