It's not bad hygiene, you don't have to be dirty to get things like that. Although it is quite a large possibility, she could have stayed out doors for a while. But I don't think so, what I think happened was while she was asleep some fly came and laid eggs in her hair. In the morning she washed it but one remaind. This can also be the case for flees. Flees LOVE clean hair, the only cure to flees is shaving the head off.

Hi, during my volunteering period, i was working with geneva ganga association and i saw a man suffeing from same symptom, there was a whole in his frontal portion of skull and this maggot thing used to come out a bit from there from time to time, i used h2o2 and betadine solution to cure it, but to no avail, finally we had to pull the thing out , there were about 2-3 of them all alive and kicking.
The wond healed in some days , then i didn't know there is thicvk layer of fat between scalp and skull but it was very strange experience to encounter.

this is a common thing here in Central America. There is such a huge variety of flora and fauna. I assure you that's nothing. It actually just itches and thickles but it doesn't really hurt but it is gross. We use alcohol and tobbacco to make them come out, or just squeeze them the fock out, it's cooler this way.
