  • works the opposite way too

if you dont have a corkscrew, place a towel on the bottom of a wine/champagne bottle and hit it horizontally ( i dont know why) on a solid piece of wood. Cork will slowly work its way out.

the bottom is not precut, it is an old bar trick, you undo the cap and apply force to the top of the bottle, the force causes the bottom to come right off

        • Not Entirely

When you hit it, you have to cover the entire opening with your hand and keep it there. This causes a sudden build up in pressure from the carbon-Dioxide that helps pop the bottom off

the cap was on it if you look right at the end of the vid..
also tell me this.. why is the vid posted 55 minutes ago on june 3rd, but theres a comment from may 30th?.. and i hope it wasnt a good beer...

        • No the cap wasn't on!

How would you be able to vary the pressure if the cap was still on? It's not that complicated! The video was posted 55 minutes ago on the front page of metacafe but was posted on the site days before. When the rating got above 3.2 or 3.3 it reached the front page.

        • oh oh

I know how you could very the pressure without taking the cap off. Shake or impact it. retard

Beer is carbonated just like pop. Well from a different process but still it is super saturated with gas. This means a shake or impact will increase the pressure.

If you don't believe take a 2 liter of pop. Squeeze it to see how much you can compress it. Then shake it up and you will see after words it is firmer because there is more pressure inside. It is more noticeable if you poor some out put the cap back on and try it.

        • It still wouldn't break DUMBASS! It's ma...

Shaking a glass beer bottle and shaking a plastic pop bottle are 2 completely different things. By shaking a beer bottle you will increase the pressure but the bottle will be able to withstand it since it is not compressable like an alluminum can or a plastic bottle. So let's take your situation and shake a beer bottle with the cap on and slam our hand on the top and see what happens... NOTHING would happen since the cap is blocking the pressure from varrying.

        • ARE YOU THAT FUC.KING RETARDED???

The cap does not keep the pressure from changing. That is the entire point of the pop bottle test. If it is harder to squeeze that mean the pressure inside is greater. I mean you could open it and put a pressure gage inside, but I have a feeling you don't have one of those sitting around the house that will fit into a bottle.

I also didn't say that would break it either. I only said that an impact would change the internal pressure of the bottle. Note when you take off the cap from a shaken up pop you have to release pressure or it will spray every where.

Of course the glass beer bottle could withstand the pressure of being shaken. So can a plastic one and a can. I mean it would be pretty dumb if put crap in containers that cant hold it.

He probably did what I would have done and cut the glass part way though where he wanted it to break.

Why don't you take a beer bottle with cap off and slam your had on the top of it. What happens oh nothing other then maybe if foaming over when you remove your hand depending on kind and temperature?

Where is the magic pressure you are thinking off come from? Also why did it not explode the bottle like a normal over pressurized bottle?

Also do you think your palm can hold more pressure then a cap???????

I have blown up bottles with dry ice and random fizzy chemicals around the house. I also have tried putting my hand on the top and I can never hold very much pressure. It just leaks by.

        • OMG! The liquid doesn't have to be carbo...

Have you even tried this trick? It's not hard. If you don't drink alcohol then take any glass bottle of juice or even Dad's Root Beer. Here's how the trick works. If you've taken a high school science class you've probably done this.
          1. Fill an empty beer bottle with water. Leave about an inch of air in the top of the bottle.
          2. Make a circle around the top of the bottle with your left thumb and index finger. Wrap the remaining three fingers around the bottle and get a good firm grip on it. Hold the bottle in front of you, at waist height, while standing. The bottle should be held vertically.
          3. Visualize yourself hitting the top of the bottle with the fleshy part of your right palm. Your wrist should be bent backwards as far as is comfortable. Your right hand should impact the top of the bottle (and left hand) just in front of your wrist so as not to bend your wrist back any further on impact.
          4. Take a couple of deep breathes or use any other conventions you may know to muster up all of your speed and strength. We want to hit the bottle so that all of your power hits the bottle straight down. Again visualize hitting the bottle, and even practice in slow motion a few times.
          5. Make sure you've got a good grip on the bottle so that you don’t drop it.
          6. Hit it hard! If the bottle doesn't break the first time (it probably won't if you've never done this before) don't give up.

If the cap was on... this cannot happen since no air will be able to compress the liquid in the bottle all the way to the bottom. when your palm hits the openning of the bottle, it compresses the air causing the liquid to travel with extreme force to the bottom of the bottle causing it to break. It's not that hard... I did it way back in the 10th grade (I'm 28 right now working as a medical resident in a hospital, so I think I know a thng or two about science)

You're right that if the liquid in a bottle were carbonated and then the bottle were to be shaken, then that would cause pressure on the bottle but in this particular case, it doesn't matter. The drink could be carbonated or it could just be water the effect would be the same! The bottle wasn't precut either. I hope you understand how this works now.

        • I am not saying that the cap was on it

I am just saying you can build up gas pressure better with the cap on it.

If he had an inch of air at the top this trick does not work unless you cut the bottom. i mean if you wanted to double the pressure inside by compression of a gas you would have to cut the volume of the gas in half. It would take well more then a doubling of pressure to do this. Remember
          PV=nRT
          Which means
          P=nRT/V
which means if we keep n and T constant and well R is a constant, p is inversely proportional to V

You have to take the cap off and fill it to the rim. Then you are not compressing air. You are tiring to compress the liquid which is not very compressible. This gives you more force at the bottom then the top due to basic hydraulics. since the area of the bottom is about 10 times that of the top you get 10 times the force there you put on the top.I would still score the bottom if I was doing it just to give it a flaw and make sure that broke out and the whole thing did not shatter in my hand.

Also the shock of the downward hit puts extra force on the bottom this is why the bottom breaks out instead of the sides like when you normally overpressure one of those bottles.

Yes this will only work with glass ones because they are brittle, any ductile material will absorb the shock and then return to shape. Why you can’t do it with plastic bottles.

You said you can't increase the pressure with the cap on that is not true. if you have an inch of air and a fizzy liquid you will get a greater pressure build up with the cap on then with it off, but that will not be able to break the bottle.

Sorry I was too lazy to explain the trick to you the first time. I was just telling you that you where wrong and stupid. I hope this does a better job for you. I was even sober when I wrote this one.

I mean compressing the air. lol what a retard.

        • I see what you're saying but...

You're correct in saying volume is inversely proportional to pressure which means in this case when there is little volume, there is great pressure and vice versa. Having a one inch air pocket is enough for this particular trick because although pressure is inversely proportional to volume, the amount of force that is required for this experiment is what generally helps create a substantially larger PSI on the bottle (F=ma). The force is transformed into creating large pressure, which is then transformed into kinetic energy in the water upto the point where it breaks to brittle glass. Keep in mind that this would probably still work if the bottle were half filled with a liquid but greater accuracy would be required to make sure little force (pressure) is absorbed on the side walls of the bottle but rather straight down to the bottom of the bottle. This is why I said to keep a one inch pocket, (around 3 inches might be better). If a fizzy liquid were to be loaded to the very top of the bottle where a cap were to be then added and then shaken, the cap would likely fly off but the bottle would not break... like you said.

I agree that I was incorrect in saying that the pressure could not vary with the cap on but the point I was trying to make was the this trick could not occur with the cap on.. I guess I should have been more clear.

I would like you to try this simple experiment as I did so you can prove that I am right..... YOU DON"T HAVE TO CUT THE BOTTLE!!!

Hopefully now you're sober and can test this experiment out like I did (using around a 3 inch pocket rather than 1) and will be able to see why you're wrong! Good luck.

        • I know you don't have to cut it

I just said i would score it because it would make it safer. he didn't in the post becasue you could see the chunks that came off going up the bottle. i like to be safe.

        • what are you talking about?

all coolsam was saying was that the cap wasn't on. I'ts impossible to break the bottle with the cap on. What does the fizzy liquid have to do with this anyways? The liquid could be water just like coolsam said. If you don't understand how this works then read an introductory physics book and go to kinetics and you should see some experiments based on forces. When you slam your hand, it causes the small air pocket left in the bottle to compress, which cause the remaining liquid to absorb that force and travel with that force all the way to the bottom of the bottle... resulting in the glass break since it couldn't absorb that force. Simple as that... no need for the textbook :-).

You were right though that you can change the pressure with the cap on... if the liquid were carbonated but that is irrelevent in this particular experiement.

        • I am not saying the cap was on

I am saying you can very the pressure inside with the cap on.

If there is like an inch air pocket this won’t work at all.
You have to fill it to the top with the liquid so you only have hydraulic transfer you don't have the gas compressing absorbing your force. Remember PV=nRT if there was an inch of air at the top this trick would not work.

I really didn't think I had to explain the whole trick to call someone dumb for saying that you cant very the pressure in a bottle of a liquid supersaturated with a gas without opening it.

I guess you have to explain everything on here when you call someone dumb not just point out that they are dumb. My bad
