This song has nothing to do with politics; it came to Neil Peart when he saw a cartoon strip in which the trees of a forest were arguing like people. Not about communism, not about Adam and Eve, not about Neil Young, not about capitalism, and definitely not about a hockey team.

Maybe, in both myth and, your other meaning. I think it's more about oppressed peoples and, their oppressors not seeing the forest, for the trees! One side doesn't see anything wrong with their actions and, the oppressed choose a way that may seem right, but makes them more like their former oppressors.

This song is about Adam and Eve, a christian myth. The hatchet, axe and saw, did not act alone. They were used by God. Meaning, both Adam and Eve lost.

Dude, as soon as I heard this song I thought "OMFG ENTS!". I still get shivers every time I see the last march of the Ents.

This song seems to be about the communist approach to settling class differences. The poor people (maples) and rich people (oaks) were all made equal by destroying everything ("by hatchet, axe, and saw!")
